Almost no one performs the zigzag correctly. Harbin explains in his book how important it is to have a lay spectator push the middle part over.
When Harry Blackstone Junior performed the zigzag I noticed it was wrong and photographed it and sent the pictures to Harbin, who immediately got hold of Harry and told him to get rid of the Silver line at the right because it was wrong. Make sure you look at the video of Harbin doing this affect. It is one of the most amazing and simple illusions ever designed.

I was recently looking up something else in the biography of Doug Henning ("Spellbound: The Wonder-Filled Life of Doug Henning" by John Harrison) and happened to come across this information on page 85: Quote:
"In addition to the Owen Magic props , the Zig-Zag and Metamorphosis previously built by Ed Wilcox were likewise shipped to the Cherry Lane garage" . (this is in context of discussing the lead-up to "The Magic Show" debut , with Doug acquiring the necessary illusions from Owen Magic Supreme and the rehearsal space he worked in before the show was loaded-in to the Cort Theater.) So, the one with the chrome strips was Doug's first Zig-Zag , built by Ed Wilcox. Earlier in the book (on page 43) there is a photo of Doug performing the Zig-Zag a few years earlier while still in Canada, that also has the chrome strips on the cabinet , which I assume is the same cabinet which Doug was using in The Magic Show , but it was repainted. At some point during the run of The Magic Show the chrome strips were removed , as the later photo shows : Maybe it was a similar situation to what Pete Biro described , re: Harry Blackstone's first version -- Quote:
