Just saw the latest from Jay Sankey!
Deranged (DVD & Gimmicks) by Jay Sankey LINK: http://www.mjmmagic.com/store/-p-19933.html Eight pieces of a cut postcard (featuring Leonardo da Vinci's 'Mona Lisa') are handed out to be closely examined. A spectator selects one of the pieces. And a folded prediction is introduced. A spectator is asked to hold the remaining pieces behind her back and give them the 'ultimate fair shuffle' (mixing their order, and also randomly turning them over.) When the spectator slowly deals the pieces onto the table, and the prediction is unfolded, it perfectly matches the selected piece! And the prediction also matches the exact arrangement of the remaining 7 pieces! DERANGED is easy to do, immediately resets, and never misses! Includes the custom designed postcard, plastic wallet and full-length DVD! |

It would be a nice follow up to Mona Lisa Van Gogh by Miracle Factory .

Is this one of those effects where the outcome is 'always the same'?

I like the use of art in effects, but I do not like that you take out the prediction after the person selects the piece. I do not recall if the ad copy says if there are different outcomes. I also wonder how strong the paper is and if you can make another one if it tears. I do like the concept.

Jheff actually (even seemingly reluctantly, lol) had good things to say about this on the most recent Cassidy's Chat with Bob Cassidy. But he wasn't giving a formal review and didn't really describe much.
Reading the advert I was also struck by the emphasis on removing the prediction AFTER the selection of a piece. It seemed aimed at avoiding later claims of false advertising, which is all well and good if I'm correct that is the goal, but left me wondering if Deranged might lean toward the transparent side or have other limitations one should be aware of when considering making a purchase. Anyone have this yet who can address these issues? Thanks in advance. |

I ordered it out of curiousity and that I like mentalism and/or magic that uses famous pieces of art. I will letyou know when I receive it.

I have this. I really like it! There are pros and cons:
PROs It is a very good effect. TO CLARIFY, you DO NOT have to bring out the prediction after they select the card. You can bring it out at any time. I personally hand out the pieces for examination, then I draw my prediction on a blank piece of paper. Then they pick a piece and mix up the pieces behind their back. It is a real worker. Every bit of what you need can be carried in a two pouch card carrier (provided). Jay offers several handling suggestions. I use a slightly different handling that I think makes the whole thing easier, allows for an easy examination, and resets easily. The method is clever and a layperson would be fooled. CONs It is going to have the same outcome every performance and you can't change that. I don't see this as an effect that you would repeat anyway. Also, if you are performing this in walk-around, even if someone sees the effect more than once, they either aren't going to see that it is exactly the same outcome, or they might think that you are influencing the outcome. If you are concerned about this, then make your presentation include the assertion that you can control the outcome. The handlings he presents are very good, but IMO, there is a better handling. Of course, everyone is going to come up with their own handling. I like my handling because it is so clean and allows for the most clean examination. I don't normally have participants examine the props, but in this routine, they are going to be handling the props, so I think it needs to be part of the routine for them to freely examine the props. If you do the version where you hand it out for examination, one of the pieces is missing. It's not a shortcoming of the effect, it's just the way the props were printed. In my handling, I use this discrepancy as part of the presentation so it is a non-issue, not a problem at all, rather, it's a plus. IMO, you need to do the version with the examination because at certain points, you have to exercise a bit of participant management. IMO, if you do the examination phase, then this is a mute point. I'm sure some people will take issue with this, but I really think it is about how experienced you are in handling audience members. VERDICT I am very glad I purchased this. My handling makes this a much more powerful routine. If anyone buys this and can prove to me that you own it, I will gladly share my handling ideas if you PM me. I have a lot of Jay's "stuff", and while they are not all gems, I really like this one. KJ |

Does this used his paperclipped handling with the reveal in the paperclip?

Just bought this a couple of days ago. Working on the patter now and really think that this could be a very powerful effect if well presented. Pack small and reset instantly.

Tried this on the wife tonight and it bombed the wife test big time. She guessed the method immediately. I don't even think this is worth putting away in the magic drawer. I think it will end up in the trash. I really wanted to like it too.
