Hi everyone. I often read that you should not hypnotize people with epilepsy, and was curious as to why this is. As an epileptic myself I have never had any issue with being hypnotized, no negative health from it nor any seizures resulting from either self-hypnosis or from being hypnotized by someone else. Is that merely a safety protocol to guard yourself in the event that something possibly goes wrong, or are there real cases of hypnosis negatively affecting epileptics? Is there any medical reading on the subject you can point me to? Since I very much enjoy trance work and "going under", I want to be certain that I am not putting myself in danger when doing it.
Thanks in advance. Charles |

Because of the bad publicity is my answer. I have the standard warning, but an epileptic volunteered at one of my shows. After the show he suffered a massive seizure and had to be taken to hospital. Everyone blamed me. Then his sister, who was a nurse, told us the real reason. He had been warned to stay off alcohol because it would clash with the medication he was on. He came to my show, and when he stepped off the stage he had a pint of beer. The seizure was unrelated to the hypnosis, but I took the blame in the eyes of most of the audience - and one newspaper that rang me, but backed off when I made it clear I would sue if they published.
In a clinical setting it may be very different, but as I will never do that, it is irrelevant to me.

Because on the stage you can end up with an issue that is not related to hypnosis thst you are not qualified to handle.

...and of course to the audience, those that have hired you and most others, they will almost always think it has something to do with us and hypnosis.

Thanks guys, that is what I assumed was going on with that "warning", but as I said I just wanted to be sure I was in no danger, but rather it was just a statement of covering ones backside in the event that by a stroke of bad timing and luck someone goes into a seizure and people believe the cause to be the hypnosis.
I appreciate your responses. All the Best, Charles |

It's more of a CYA statement and purpose in most performances.

You cannot safely say that being on stage won't trigger a seizure because it definitely can. High emotions stress and certain moods can and do trigger seizures. While on stage these elements are amplified much more than normal so its its likely that stage hypnosis can indeed trigger seizures. Hypnosis can be used therapeutically to help epileptics by reducing stress and changing mood swings and focusing on the positive things going on in their lives. But even so personally I wouldn't take on a client with epilepsy.
A full blown seizure can even be brought on by a simple suggestion to have one---in fact there are doctors who do this as they say it helps them with treatment. http://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/20......res.html So to say hypnosis can have no effect on epileptics is just plain wrong and we should always avoid them on stage. And really make it clear in the pre talk. Of course its important to cover one's ass but to believe there are no real risks when you do stage hypnosis is simply wrong. Tony told me a story where he hypnotized someone in a spooky setting and took him through a scarey visualization and the guy freaked out screamed was terrified and ran out of the venue only to be found at the bottom of a hill out of his wits. A good job he wasn't an elliptic ... |

There are really more risks and things that can be harmful than just physical injuries due to falling over. A good solid pre talk can go a long way to help minimize them. But there is always a risk. I think the best way to cover your ass is to be aware of them. And learn more about the subject not just stage mechanics.
