I know mentalists aren't magicians(eye roll) but I couldn't help but post this on what would have been Bill Bixby's 80th birthday.

I watched a biography on him. He had a tough life. His child died. His wife committed suicide. He got cancer. His new wife left him.
And to show what a nerd I am, I have Joe Hartnell's score to THE INCREDIBLE HULK on CD. "Did you ever try to think of just nothing?" |

I was in 5th grade when the Magician was on TV and it is the reason I first got into magic. Thanks for sharing that show open, it brought back so many memories. I always waited with anticipation for the trick he would track toward the end of the show!

Thanks, MG. I loved, LOVED Bill Bixby -- huge part of my childhood (Hulk era). I remember being so shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. These little clips are bringing up some emotions, for sure... He always exuded this aura of decency, warmth, and good nature. (Probably 'cause he had to control his rage to avoid a green wake of destruction, poor soul...)
Very nice birthday remembrance. |

Thank you for this MG!
Whenever he was in the Montreal area, he'd come visit my father (this was in the 70s). I remember him fondly. Thank you again xx Morgaine |

I well remember the show on British TV, I used to make sure I watched it. There wasn't much magic on the box so it was a treat.
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.

Watching Bill Bixby as Tim O'Hara in My Favorite Martian was a real treat for me growing up in the 60s. No need to feel like a nerd MG - I've got George Greeley's soundtrack to My Favorite Martian on CD as well as an autographed photo of Ray Walston as Uncle Martin on my office wall! In the mid 70's there was a TV series hosted by Bixby in which extracts from various international magician's acts were shown. I think it was filmed at FISM or some such competition, but Bill Bixby's spots were filmed in the Magic Castle. I distinctly remember that you never got to see a complete act in one show. Over the course of a few episodes I was able to mentally piece together what the act of, say, Ali Bongo was actually like! It was Bixby's charm that let me believe that he was really letting me in on the inner secrets of magic. Fond memories.

Synchronicity, two days ago out of the blue I was thinking about Bill Bixby and how old he was when he passed and did a Yahoo search to find the Wikipedia entry! I hadn't thought of Bill in years and then this post? Very cool.
Watching these clips has brought back many fond memories growing up. Bixby had a real class about him. Thanks MG. |

An absolutely wonderful show that I well remember watching in the early 70's and still occasionally re-watch as I have them on hard drive. Bill Bixby was perfect in the role.

Tom,
I enjoyed all the clips you posted, but that last one (the final interview) was great. Very moving. He was so genuine Especially when he was talking about the woman he got to know in the cancer ward Thanks.. |

I was in college, and just getting serious about performing. I used to watch The Magician with a pencil and HUGE drawing pad, and sketch out all the effects and how (I thought) they were done. I also wanted to buy a white Corvette, but when I went to the dealer and tried one on (I’m 6’3”) I didn’t fit!
Great memories!
...what if I could read your mind?

I have all the soundtracks too - I collect soundtracks like wild - music as a narrative force is powerful indeed.
The quiet hulk music is *** powerful - more powerful than the "hulk out" ones.... poignant.
