Just picked up a set of a Triad Coins for a song 2nd hand. I saw Josh do it live in his very first stop of last year's tour. I was front row and didn't think it looked good enough to pick up. Thought about it a few months and found a set on the big auction site. After playing with it a few hours, I kinda like it. Will take a bit more finesse before working it into a set though. Anyone else work with it?

Well, from what I see, basically all 3CM and Triple Threat routines can be done with this set (since they are essentially the same thing).

Not really, My friend picked up a set of Triad Coins at Magi-fest and they do not have the same "property" of a TT set. Pepka, I will let you know how I like them when I get a chance to mess around with my friends set.

No...they do not. I've been playing with mine for about 2 weeks. Still not comfy enough to show anyone, but fun to play with and it definitely has potential. Josh had a VERY cool 3-Fly in the video instructions.

Sounds rubbish to me. After a fairly painful search, I found a description of these coins which claimed a 'special property'. If they don't have what a 3T has, then what is that property?!

If all else fails, Pepka, ship them to me and I'll come up with a couple of special effects, then send them back.
Remember, I found the TUC and within two months had created 38 new effects, encouraged other to create some and worked with Mr. Tango to publish a book with 63 effects. Why would I do this? Because I can't perform any more with crippled hands, but can contribute to the art of magic though creativity.

Thanks for the PM, Pepka, that clears up my confusion somewhat. I gather this is being released as a stand alone product later this year. I imagine there will be much discussion here when that happens.

Triad coins are awesome. I especially do it for the Teenagers. I present it very simply and I say "you know the trick where you pull a coin out of someones ear right?" they say yeah "how about 3?" . Fried.

Forgive my ignorance with terms
Is it a coin with 2 [ I'm much better with coin work, than coin terminology. I have an early Todd L work, that I got over 15 years ago. Still works great, though I can do similar stuff with 3 coins. I also use it combined it with the above 3 coins and and a coin & [

We had an opportunity to see Josh perform Triad last night here in the Detroit area.
Most succinctly, Awesome! A majority of our magician colleagues are extremely FRUGILE ... they bought the set! A great value if you really want to perform a miracle! johno from tropical Michigan |

Just picked these up myself and I really like the set! As someone who doesn't own a 3CM or Triple Threat coin, what are some routines that could carry over to this set? I know that it doesn't have that special property, but I'm sure some things can carry over with some modification.

Hey guys!
I'm pretty familiar with the Triad Coins. Just a couple of things. It does not use magnets, but instead nests in an unusual way, unlike 3CM or Triple Threat. This unusual nesting property allows the coins to unnest silently and together for productions and vanishes. It also allows for a 3 fly in which your hands never, ever have to come together to make an adjustment. Hope that helps! -Kyle

I bought a set when Jay lectured in Richmond, VA, and enjoy performing with them.
I perform a three coin production and vanish with them pretty much exclusively. The production sequence is great because of the design of the nesting coins. The vanish sequence is a bit more challenging for me. I place the coins in a fan in my left hand and nest them one at a time under the action of grabbing them one at time from the fan to vanish them I have on occasion mixed up the order of the coins so that the full coin nest into the large shell, but then that won't fit into the small shell. I have to mentally track which coin is which during performance because the shells cannot be distinguished by sight. Another issue I have is that by nesting the shells from a fan position the coins are not reset for the production sequence. I have to adjust the outermost shell in my pocket to set it up again if I want to perform a second time. If anyone has a solution to this problem I would love to learn how you approached it. Josh Jay used these coins to great effect in his version of the coins in the cylinder routine. In his online lectures he showed how to do it with flipper and shell, but in the lecture tour he used the triad coin set to produce thee coins magically, vanish them to reappear under his ring inside the leather cylinder, then reproduce the coins and lifting the cylinder to show just his ring. They worked extremely well for this and looked great sitting on a table as they do at chest height. If you want to experiment with this gimmick but can't buy one right now, you may be able to make one yourself out of other gimmicks you have on hand. I noticed that the coin and shell included in my Tango brand hopping half set was a milled down coin and shell. It fit inside of my Johnson brand tails shell just right to form what essentially worked like a triad coin set. Bobo mentions this arrangement for a milled down coin fitting in an unexpanded shell inside an expanded shell, but the triad coin changes up the arrangement just slightly to solve some of the complications of detesting the set at chest height. So when retuning with this set, try to approach it as you would a coin and shell routine. You have many of the same restrictions as you would in this routines, but with the added benefit of bringing another coin along for the ride the whole time. Consider the possibilities of adding some real coins to the mix or some contrasting coins. You could do a really clean wild coin routine for example, that ends with three contrasting coins that you can actually show off since you wouldn't need to palm away three solid coins. |

Why not color code the inside of the shells. The audience never sees the inside and color may help you keep them ordered. It doesn't have to be full on neon green but a small dot of paint or even from a sharpy. You really only have to mark one shell to identify either the smaller or larger.

I love Josh's routine. Best last coin vanish I've ever seen. I have the Triad coins but am not a fan. Noisy in my opinion. I like my triple threat sets way better. Silent and lock.
