I do a lot of different theme shows as well as puppet shows, music shows, etc. I'm wondering if it's better to approach libraries as an entertainment agency with lots of options or as a magician with a specific show. I imagine it could be really specific to each particular youth librarian, and once I talk to someone I can feel them out, but I'm trying to decide which approach to start with. Does anyone have any experience, data, or insider information on this?

Are you an agency? Or just a performer with multiple shows?

As Mindpro implies, unless you are an agency, don't approach them as an agency. What if they wanted three shows from you, and got you three times? The game would be up. If you are a performer with multiple shows, approach them as such.

Libraries like schools have become very tight with their budgets these days.
they are also picking performers or shows that offer actual educational content that will apply to either the libraries theme for the year or to reading books in general. they are also looking for more unique performers rather then just the same old magic based show. don't get me wrong they want magic shows but they are looking for other unique type of shows or a magic show that is unique from the others out there. best way to approach them is like any other client. tell they what you provide and how it will benefit them and the community. good luck sam,

I am an agency, but it's 70% me and 30% other people I book. Great replies so far, thanks!

I believe you would be best served by approaching this market with your service that best matches their interests. Once you have established yourself in this market, you will be better able to determine how/if your additional services could be utilized. The fact that you have multiple offerings is of no value to them until they are convinced that any one of them meet their needs. The idea of possible multiple bookings in the same year at a reduced rate may appeal to some libraries, but I believe it is an approach you would discuss after you are established. Unless you are trying to book shows in the middle of nowhere, they already have a variety of entertainment choices, so the fact that you can offer variety only helps them as far as pricing advantages or dependability (quality) once you establish/earn it.

MagisterFreud, Sam is 100% correct. Whether you are an agency or not, the acts you pitch have to have educational content. It can't just be an "ordinary" magic or clown act anymore.
In the case of libraries, you'll have much better luck with a show that fits their annual summer reading theme (for summer bookings). And for other times of the year, a reading show extolling (1) the benefits of reading books, and/or (2) the importance developing good reading skills, and/or (3) the value of the library. |
