"Canada’s leading surveillance agency is monitoring millions of Internet users’ file downloads in a dragnet search to identify extremists, according to top-secret documents. The revelations about the spying initiative, codenamed LEVITATION, are the first from the trove of files provided by National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden to show that the Canadian government has launched its own globe-spanning Internet mass surveillance system.
Ron Deibert, director of University of Toronto-based Internet security think tank Citizen Lab, said LEVITATION illustrates the “giant X-ray machine over all our digital lives.” “Every single thing that you do – in this case uploading/downloading files to these sites – that act is being archived, collected and analyzed,” Deibert said, after reviewing documents about the online spying operation for CBC News. “These revelations make clear that CSE engages in large-scale warrantless surveillance of our private online activities, despite repeated government assurances to the contrary,” Christopher told The Intercept." Caught this on the news this morning. Unfortunately the current government has the support of a wide array of "republican lite" voters.

I'm not familiar with Canadian law with regard to warrants. What kinds of procedures require warrants, and how are they obtained?

Furthermore, as far as this particular story mentioned in the OP goes, "By law, CSE isn't allowed to target Canadians. Canada's commissioner charged with reviewing the secretive group found it unintentionally swept up private communications of 66 Canadians while monitoring signals intelligence abroad, but concluded there was no sign of unlawful practice. Canada is supposed to mask the identities of untargeted Canadians scooped up in its surveillance before passing information to its Five Eyes partners and law enforcement agencies." So, as I said, at least for now, based on what I've read / heard, I do not really see this as a big concern. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/cse-tracks.......2930120

Because government officials would never lie about mass surveillance, as we've proved in the US. Oh, wait... 15 million downloads scoured daily, and they claim 66 Canadians by accident? Balducci, I know you can do that math. They're lying.

Neither side wishes to discuss matters of an open lawsuit, but documents intercepted by wiki leaks seem to show a struggle between defining the settlement in Canadian or US dollars. |

"I agree. If one can believe what they read. That is where trust comes into play and the greater good."
Yes, trust certainly does come into it. I think the Canadian federal governments over the years for the most part have been good. They do not have a reputation for abusing their citizens. Truly I worry more about the U.S. (government agencies and private companies like facebook and google) monitoring what I do and impacting my freedom than I do about Canada doing the same. Also, the political system is different here in Canada than it is in the States. It is a parliamentary system here, with several (i.e. more than just two) political parties in the mix. If a government here in Canada messes up, and loses the faith of its citizens, it can be removed in short order. Our elected federal officials do not have a (virtually) guaranteed 4 or 6 year term of office as they do in your land. Elected officials can and do switch parties here, if they lose faith in their leader. (Sure, one or two might do it occasionally in the States, but here they can do it en masse.) Or they can call for a leadership review and force an early election. Also, opposition parties can band together to defeat the government. So I think all of these things put a damper on government abuses here. None of this is to say that I am thrilled with the current federal government, for a variety of reasons.

That didn't stop the British govt. who are probably the worst abusers of surveillance technology and privacy in the Western World.
