Not-so-distant future? That seems so 2005. You mean Tweet and Instagram, right?

Chalk and slate are elements found in the earth- the final resting place of the bodies the spirits once inhabited. Thus, their natural attraction as communication tools.

What of bodies that were cremated, or buried at sea, or via a sky burial or other such funeral?

I can see that there are presentations which excuse the chalk and slates, and even make them appropriate. That does not, however, change my opinion that they are a bit antiquated. Nor do I wish to change anyones opinion on their validity of use. We've all got our own opinions, and mine seems to be the unpopular one on this topic.

That said, I did not mean to derail the thread so I'll let it get back to what it was created for. Smile

Chaz93,

One could go a step further and effectively argue that belief in ghosts is antiquated. This is precisely why slates appeal to me personally.

I don't believe in ghosts. I actually feel that they are out-of-place in a modern context ... but I thoroughly enjoy a good, old-fashioned ghost story. To me, spirit writing is essentially an illusion within a ghost story. When performing any "supernatural" effect, I often find it helpful to reference the 19th century - the time when spiritualism was at its zenith. To accomplish this, I remove the comforts of today and replace them with articles from a time when superstition reigned. Electric light is replaced by candlelight, iPads by slate, etc. Once you convince your audience that very atmosphere has changed, it doesn't matter how modern your equipment is.

Of course, my objective is not to convince a present-day audience that ghosts exist. Instead, I attempt to demonstrate how even with antiquated techniques, our modern, educated minds can still fail to reliably distinguish reality from fantasy.

P.S. I orignally found my way to this thread because it is making a very compelling testimony in favor of purchasing this video. Smile

If you do purchase it, I don't think you'll be disappointed. I thought it was great. Also, take a look at "The Ultra Slate Message" in The Jinx Winter Extra, 1935/1936. Annemann seems especially enthusiastic about it, and watching the video gave me a greater appreciation for it.

Thanks, for the feedback, Truman. I bought the video last night and I'm happy that I did. I'm going to have to read more about Mr. Cassidy since he and I are neighbors.

I just purchased the download and thought it was great. The section on utility devices was also excellent. I just went to the bookstore and purchased a pocket dictionary!
