Bill Hallahan!

Hi! Your post reminded me! Nate Leipzig would always wait until several people (at a party or other social event) asked him to, "Please, Nate, do some magic for us!" He usually waited until they had asked him several times.

He wanted to be sure that they wanted him to perform, and weren't just being polite!

Then, he watched the ladies! At the first sign that the ladies had "had enough", he finished the trick, and quit!

Note: Every trick that he did was strong enough to close!

Remember Nate's great bit of philosophy! "If they like YOU, they will like what you do!"

So, Oli! First, "work" on getting "them" to like YOU!

From the posts you have made since you "joined this show", I think you are a very likable person.

Use the magic as your "secret weapon"!

Well thank you for your kind words Dick, you don't seem too bad yourself Smile haha. Again we return to Nate and his philosophies, I think he's Definately got the right idea. Thank you Bill Hallahan for the advice I will take that on board. So from the responses I will lead with the listening and show an interest in people and use an effect if they ask me to. Don't want to come off as "masturbating on stage" as you once said Dick haha.

Thank you again everyone,

Magic Oli

So, as Lucy (in the comic strip "PEANUTS") said to Linus, as he trudged off to his first day in Kindergarten: "Become educated"!

I have a problem! (I'm educated beyond my intelligence!)

It was my first day in the first grade! Our teacher said: "Two plus two equals four!" I thought, "This is going to be an easy class!"

But, the very next day, she said, "Three plus one equals four!" And, I said, "Please! Make up your mind!"

She never called on me for the rest of the year!

Harry,
Wow! Interesting reply.
All I said is that it would be good to hear their side of the story.

No - what you said was "I see Harry bashing and insulting many reputable people." And all I said is that YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE HECK YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT. Let me repeat - YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE HECK YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT.

Lennert Green, Jerry Lucas, Dale Carnegie, etc., etc., etc.
Perhaps there is more to it.
It'll be interesting to hear the other side of the stories.

When I got to the point in magic when it became an obsession, I was often showing friends and family a magic trick. One time, one of my wife's friends rolled her eyes when she saw me coming with a deck of cards in my hand.
Sort of like saying, "here we go again".

After a while I tried to look at myself from their point of view.
I imagined a friend always wanting to show me a trick whenever I saw him/her.
Some people may consider it a a strange hobby for an older guy.
Needless to say, I don't do that anymore.
Now, I only do the magic in certain situations. People are entertained.

I agree with Dick about reading the thread above. A lot of good advice.

Excuse the misspellings please. Had a couple of pre-dinner drinks - forced to do that by the great knowledgeable ones like I-Hipe. Incredible.

5 minutes to wow a group? I would probably start with something very visual and shocking like extreme burn or prophet. After that you would have their full attention to preform pretty much anything. Maybe another visual illusion like a torn and restore card like TRAP or Descent. That should leave quite an impression and that is your 5 minutes! All of these you would probably have on you anyway (your wallet and a deck).

Welcome Elimination,etc.!

Did you read this thread from the beginning???

If not, may I suggest that you go back and read it. TRICKS are merely creative tools, like an artist's paint brush.

Especially note the references to the late Nate Leipzig.

You never get a second chance, to make a first impression!

Hi nice to meet you. I have read the thread but I really didn't see any straight answers to the OP. A very specific question was asked and I answered. I definitely agree with what you are saying but I would like if I asked a question that I could get some good answers. You are also right again, you definitely don't get a second chance at a first impression. Me personally do not give that much merit to that very old saying. I mean what if when you meet a person they are just having a horrible day? That shouldn't be the only way that I see that person. That wouldn't be fair. What if the next day they turned out to be a totally amazing person? Never judge a book by it's cover, read it first then decide.
