When the mentalist appears to be part of the hired help, then the art is trivialized. I mean, why would I be working the tables at a pizza hut, or passing the hat outside on the street, if I was a mind reader?

So... by your point of view Bob, Is it impossible to do mentalism in a walk around situation without trivializing the art?

Did I say thst? It's quite possible to do it in SOME venues without trivializing the art. Chuck E Cheese and Pizza Hut would not be among them.
If sometimes joke about what impression you'd have about Dunninger if he approached your table in a pizza joint wearing a red vest and a name tag reading "Hi, my name is Joe!" IMO a mentalist, regardless of where he/she's performing, should project professionalism and class. That's not the impression given when you just approach people and say, "Hey, you wanna see something cool?" |

Bob,
Ok, so if a show is primarily a magic or comedy show, any "mentalism" performed is mental magic. This is because the comedy and magic performed reduce or eliminate the plausibility of mentalism. Is this right? One thing I have noticed is this description about acts, not routines. Mentalism is more about the act as a whole than in individual routine. An individual routine can be considered Mentalism in one act and Mental Magic in another, depending on the focus of the show. Does this sound right? KC |

That's pretty much it, in my opinion.
