Bit of a long shot but I remember seeing what I assume was a mentalist on British TV, probably some time in the early 90s. It was on a sort of chat show, with the mentalist being interviewed by the host. The performer memorised a pack of cards and then proceeded to explain how he did it, using mnemonics and a set of images (e.g. the queen of spades is digging a hole on a golf course and she spots 3 clubs lying down in the bunker...)
Anyone know who this performer might be? Ross |
C.J. Inner circle There's a lotta rambling in my 2366 Posts |
Since he's shared the general method for memorising cards used by a lot of memory experts and competitors, there's no guarantee that he was a mentalist at all. He may have even been the guy who had just won the world memory championship, given a few minutes on air to "do his thing".
On the off chance that it was a performer though, I know Paul Zenon got a fair bit of TV time in the UK in the 90s, and had a couple of mental effects to show in his time. I used to really like watching Paul, and it was probably him (and Tommy Cooper) who were my childhood magic idols.

Ahh, fond memories of Tommy Cooper, there will never be another like him. He was definitely one of a kind. I was fortunate to meet him on several occasions.

Whoever it was, it sounds exactly like he was performing my Card Memory routine, which uses that precise presentation and was first published in the early 90's.

Yep... I would say that is Bob's Card Memory routine. But who knows, maybe C.J. is right.

Dominic O'Brien (memory expert) was on a few TV shows back then. I've never seen anyone other than a memory expert memorise cards on TV so I doubt it was Bob's presentation.

Could it have been the late Joe Riding? He was a silver haired, small, stocky ex boxer and popped up on TV every now and then, usually memorising either a pack of cards or the names of the audience members.

I think Joe appeared on a couple of Les Dawson shows in the 70s but I'm not aware of any TV work in the 90s and I was in fairly regular contact with him in the 90s and I'm sure he'd have mentioned any appearance.

Thanks people. Could have been Dominic. Just watched a video. The face does not ring a bell but the way he spoke and explained his technique did seem like it might have been him.
All the best, Ross |

Marc Paul had a TV show called mind games that was on around 1999.
The basic tool for the manipulation of reality is the manipulation of words. If you can control the meaning of words, you can control the people who must use the words.

Dominic O'Brien had an entry in the Guinness Book of Records for his 1 May 2002 feat of committing to memory a random sequence of 2808 playing cards (54 packs) after looking at each card only once. He was able to correctly recite their order, making only eight errors, four of which he immediately corrected when told he was wrong.

Way back Dominic was an audience member on a Saturday night show. The presenter asked "Is there someone in the audience who was supposed to collect his wife from Luton airport, but went to the wrong airport instead?"
Sheepishly, Dominic held his hand up and confessed to the audience about his world class memory skills!! |

That's nothing, we have a politician who leaves the pub and forgets his young daughter !
