"Female disease" might be "hysterics", PMS, or politics.

I knew an old woman who'd walked in on her husband and best friend having sex. She was understandably upset. The next day, the hubby spoke with the family doctor, and together they decided that she was delusional. She was never consulted about it.

She was committed in 1953, and finally got out in 1986, completely conditioned to the back-ward way of life. Her husband had never visited her, nor allowed her kids to see her. Her greatest pleasure was chain-smoking.

It was the definition of tragedy.

In 1967 I began a 24 year career as a psychologist at a state hospital in MA and in the first year came across a woman patienf over 90 yeaas old who had inotially been admitted in her early 20's for "alcoholism"! Obviously someone had some influence to abandon her there and there were no friemds or family to change the course of her sad life!
(By the way several years afyer I left and the hospifal was closed in the late 90's, the hospital was the main interior and external site shots for the film "Shutter Island"...which makes for a great addition to my intro and back story for my £un@ Trilogy routine.)
