You can use the puppet as the "mental" and yourself as the stooge. Put a large pencil in the puppets mouth and have it "write" the predicted number on the tablet. Choose an audience member and have them name a number from 0 - 9 and after a brief argument with the puppet, reveal the correct answer as "predicted" by the puppet mental. This plays big with the little ones.

For the older children I used to do the
'needle thru balloon' routine. I had a lot of fun with the blowing up of the balloon and tying it before I used the puppet (an elephant, btw) then I would give the puppet the needle and have it use it as a batton conducting the orchestra. Give the balloon to the puppet and do the heleum balloon gag. Then have the puppet shake with (comedy) fear as the needle got near to the balloon. Make the needle go through the balloon and finally burst the balloon myself. As usual it always looks a bit cold in print but it's a solid 5 minutes of comedy and a bit of tension. I haven't used it for years. Remembering all this I might put it in the act again. That's the amazing thing about these forums. The old brain box starts working and you never know where you'll end up.

I like -- nay, love -- the whole concept, ProfPop, but I have to ask: What's the "helium balloon gag."
Not familiar with it. cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

Hello Peter,
The helium balloon gag - well you place the balloon in the puppets mouth/hand/trunk or whatever and the puppet starts to float upwards for you to grab and pull down. With the right timing, ie... a little gap between the puppet taking the balloon and the beginning of the float it really does look very funny.

Well, here's an idea I have used. I use the Rabbit-in-the-hat puppet. After introducing the puppet and doing some by-play with it, he performs a spots-off-silk. This is essentially a color changing handkerchief, only instead of changing colors, the white polkadots fall to the floor as the change takes place--leaving a solid black handkerchief in its place. It is fairly simple to hold the silk with the puppets paws and perform the change with my free hand.

Speaking for myself (blimey I've gone all posh!!!!!)
I find that most of the routines I use have just developed over the years. It's always a good idea when you buy a new trick to try and adapt the patter and working to your own stage personality. I think it pays not to try too hard, just let things go on their own and it usually works fine. The hardest part is trying to make a routine interesting when you try and explain it in print in places such as the wonderful Magic Cafe!!!!! When you can do that you've cracked it.

I know Sammy Smith does magic with a rabbit-in-the-hat puppet. However, I've never had a chance to see his routine. I just had the puppet and wanted to have a good reason for introducing it into the show. So, I looked though all of my props trying to figure out what type of trick could be done by a puppet. Once I found the right prop, I merely worked the mechanics of the trick out with the puppet, and then began working up a routine.

Realm of the Rabbit.
Is the best book on the subject. My Friend Doug is great with his puppet. Anyone who is looking for a great book on this should check it out. I do a card trick with the kids where the rabbit is peeking this goes over very well. p.s. just use a 1 way force deck. bdormer If you like the rabbit in the hat onewaystreet.com has the best looking puppet around. If you call ask for Tom Flynn 1-303-790-1188 ext 237 (Colorado) Tell him Bill sent you. They also have a lot of puppets. also Axtell has great puppets on an upper price range, do a search for them. Are you looking to do some ventriloqism?

There are several "magic with a puppet" routines on my DVD - Let's Get Visual. There are two egg routines: one with a chicken and another completely different routine with the Axtell Dragon (adaptable to other puppets). There is also my Banana Volcano routine that is done with an Axtell Gorilla and Dan Garrett's multiplying bananas. Live performance and studio explanations are included.

If you get one of those little inflation gimmicks, you can make it look as if the monkey is blowing up a balloon (after you fail to do so). Also, a prediction routine using a change bag works well since the bag can be used one-handed. Folkmanis has the largest selection of puppets I've ever seen. On puppet which seems to be really popular among magicians right now is the sheepdog, but be warned: these dogs were designed for people with smaaaaaal hands!

There are heaps of one-handed tricks and gags. Just go through your props, and find which ones you can use one-handed. Most comedy wands, Dove Pan, Fltio Flower, Stiff Rope, CB, Remote Control Drawing Board, the list goes on and on.....
Once you've found a prop you can use with one hand, simply work out a way to incorporate a puppet into the routine. To make things simpler, add a couple more hands by having a kid helper..... ;) |
