I just ordered this book from Richard Webster, but haven't seen much in the way of reviews for it. If anyone has it, would you mind reviewing it? I know I'm doing it backwards (looking for a review after buying it) but Lulu isn't the fastest so a review or two might hold me over!

The book is definitely a classic in it's field. If you're looking to do full-length readings then it's a great starting point as, indeed, is pretty much anything written by Richard Webster.

One divination process I have used based on a combination of ancient methods takes 10-11 hours over three days. It is not for entertainment, though -- just helping people.
Why do "readings" when you can do legitimate divination based on the Elements of Determination? When you can do the real thing then you might be able to fake it. But, if your goal is to make money then offering fake readings will be more popular than the real thing, but from a business standpoint you will want short readings for a lot of people rather than long readings for a few. And what will be you USP? Mostly joking here -- but might inspire some thinking

Presently I do online tarot readings but I'm looking to start doing face-to-face readings shortly. I've purchased Webster's How to Build Up a Psychic Practice to get a better idea of how to structure a face-to-face reading, and becoming more "commercial" I suppose. From the ad blurb, it seems like it's exactly what I'm looking for, I was just hoping to see if I'm on the right track in thinking that? I've also purchased King of the Small Towns, and am really looking forward to it as well.
The last book I ordered directly from Mr. Webster (which did go through Lulu) didn't take too long, so I'm hoping these don't either. The wait for Iain's AEIOU seemed like an eternity, though. But it was well worth it. And Ray, I've read a few different samples of that book since I sent you the PM, and for $4 it seems like you can't really go wrong with it. Plus Amazon has it available for Kindle. So I'll likely be purchasing it sometime this weekend. |

MindExplosion - the book will certainly give you the information you need to do full-length readings. I am going to make one more recommendation and that is "The Vitruvian Square" by Scott Grossberg. You can get the trade paperback version from Amazon (it's the only version I have) and a true study of what's inside will give you the ability to read anytime, anywhere, with any tool you desire and for any length of time you decide.

I think I'm too late, Amazon says it's unavailable. I'll try getting a hold of Scott directly. I was looking at the book a few months back but never jumped on it. Hopefully I can dig a copy up somewhere.

Two things I've learned in life, although I admit to not always following my own advice:
1. Don't make value judgments about what other people do for a living unless you actually know what they do and how they go about it. 2. Don't judge books until you've read them. |

Completely agree Bob. Once I adopted that position it was surprising how much you could learn by talking to people rather than dismissing them based on my opinions.

Another thing- some of the most wonderful and caring people I count among my friends are full-time readers. To lump them in with con-artists who steal money from the gullible by removing curses or pretending to contact the dead simply isn't fair.
Some might even call it vile. |

If the client believes they are receiving a stand-alone psychic reading but they are actually being cold read, the person doing the reading is a charlatan and a con artist. I think that view should be pretty uncontroversial in any fair minded company.

On the bright side Mr. Webster emailed me to let me know that he actually sent the book out himself this morning (King of the Small Towns is still handled via Lulu though). And I may have found a copy of Vitruvian Square. A good day for good news!

They aren't con artists. And, like I said, many of them, including my dear friends Mr. Webster, are some of the nicest and most caring people I've ever met. |

To paraphrase a quote from Max Maven about the popularity of cold-reading material... "At your next magic club meeting, take a look around at everyone there and then ask yourself 'would I want my mother to get a psychic reading from them?' ".

Thank YOU Scott, I am the one honoured to have your quite simply wonderful work.
As to the thread - I have been working as a reader for 20 years and you never stop learning if you want to be a good reader. The journey I've been on since I started with Joe Riding and Richard Webster's work has been, for me, remarkable. I've learnt so much, my mind has opened in ways I could never have foreseen, I've met and corresponded with some wonderful readers, I've become a much, much, much better person and continue to strive to be so. Occasionally I see things that make me extremely grouchy and I hope to learn to avoid responding in haste. I can also say I've been entirely honest about my abilities. I really do read palms. I really do read cards. I really do read a person from their energy. What a person wants to make of these abilities is up to them. And that's how it should be. Are there psychic con-men? Undoubtedly. I've read a few accounts. What's interesting is that it doesn't even seem in most cases that the con-man even needed to pretend to be psychic because of the peculiar gullibility and/or unfortunate stupidity of the people concerned. Does that mean nobody should do readings? Are people really that small-minded to tar everyone with the same brush? If so, there's much bigger problems to face up to in the world than scam psychics. |
