I got to meet Dean twice at conventions and he was definitely a very kind soul that fooled the pants off of me. May he rest in peace and his warm memories live on.

I have never met him, only seen a couple very brief trailers for a couple of his effects. I do however know of him and have never heard a bad thing spoken as to his classiness. I also know the struggle of Cancer and feel horrible for anyone who must endure it for any length of time. I truly hope he is resting in peace now and no longer suffering as I read on one of these threads that he was not too long ago. Best wishes to his close friends and family in this sad time.

A Dean story...
About fifteen years ago, I purchased an expanded shell and set of 1964 halves from Jamie Schoolcraft. I was less than satisfied with the shell. I showed the coins to Denny Haney in his shop in Baltimore. Denny agreed about the shell. It wasn't that bad, but a Johnson product would have been better. That evening, unbeknownst to me, Denny was talking to Dean and related my story and dissatisfaction. The next night, I get a phone call from Dean Dill. Denny had given Dean my phone number. Dean asked me about my problem with Jamie's quality. He was sincerely interested, explaining to me that Schoolcraft was a friend of his. Once that was settled, we just talked magic for about a half hour. During the conversation, I ordered his effect, Nana's Necklace. Well, about a week later, I received my purchase, and a little something extra. Dean sent me his set of coins! They are now treasured more than before!

Another Dean story…
I'm not exactly sure how I became aware of Dean's little dog being very sick a few years ago. Anyway, I reached out to him and we talked a bit about it. He was quite upset and didn't know what to do. Well, I'm not a Veterinarian but I know Doc Rubinstein here is (And a very fine one at that), and so I reached out to Doc to help if he could (Remember that, Doc?). I believe Doc did reach back out to Dean about his dog and offered some good advice on his care during those critical moments. Dean was very thankful, and though this was not about magic per se, it was about "Magicians Helping Magicians."

Thank you for sharing this story Marion. Dean did indeed love his dog Cooper. He lost Cooper at least twice. Once after his car accident outside of Las Vega and another time when his car was stollen with Cooper inside it. Both times he was miraculously found weeks later. Dean was a friend and mentor to hundreds of magicians and was one of the most generous and loving people I've been blessed to know. Kabbalah's story is typical Dean Dill. I feel his presence when I perform his routines he taught me. I miss him so much. I am sure he would like everyone on the Magic Café toknow, he's waiting to meet you in heaven. He is there.
Mediocrity is greatly under rated!

One nice thing about Magic Castle swap meets was that Dean always had a table where you could talk with him and see his latest creation.
I remember when he debuted Dean's Box there, and also watching him develop the coin routine that became the core of Dean's Triangle. As a "coin guy," I really admired his creativity and chops, as well as his generosity and kind demeanor. Cheers, Jerry |

I'm on the East Coast -- it was an inspiration to watch the fun Dean had with his magic. It obviously meant everything to him!
