Nattefrost,
I understand your frustration. As I mentioned before, I absolutely love making gimmicks but his one is a very hard "build". That one element can make or break (no pun intended) the gimmick. Mine turned out great but, I knew as soon as the build started that not many people would have the same success. Nick is a great inventor and the gimmick is very clever. I suggest using a larger piece of that one element to make a more dependable gimmick than what was taught. The sad part is these will wear out and you'll have to make more down the road which is a given for this type of gimmick. Much success towards your next build my friend! - Davey |

Thanks, Davey, I appreciate the pm. I tried again, but I can see something is just too "tight", and without revealing too much, I know what you mean by using a bigger piece- or "longer" piece-if I am thinking correctly. I really want to complete this and like I said before I happen to love "arts and crafts" and making "gimmicks". I know there are a lot of people who hate gimmicks and use total sleight of hand with regular decks, and I CAN do (some) sleight of hand and DO carry a regular deck of cards always and have a bunch of effects I do with a non-gimmicked regular deck. But let me tell you, after working on this over and over, I am starting to really appreciate that "regular, non-gimmicked" deck thing a LOT more. After I started constructing this, and I got past the first 4 or 5 steps and it was getting late I decided to fast forward the DVD just to see what still needed to be done- and the construction just kept going, and going and going. But the visual on this just wants me to try and complete this, I don't want to quit on this like I said earlier. And I did get past the first part of the DVD when he did something to the box and I said to myself "oh no, not this- I am terrible at doing this" and I actually did it perfectly. I'm probably making this look harder than it actually is but this not easy to construct.

I got this and must say that I was pleasantly surprised. I am very used to creating this type of gimmick (not with this material though) and must admit I screwed mine up (this being because I didn't take enough time to view the video and didn't have the correct materials).
I think anyone who buys this, (after having made it) will use this regularly. Very good product |

If your gimmick is tight just move the point you fix at down a bit to reduce the tension.
I suspect the material is being cut by hand could vary in length so you may have to adjust a little. The gimmick is very nice when made, I think some may have preferred it to be ready made but then the price would have been at least twice as much. The good thing though at least you can just make more instead of re buying an expensive gimmick when it wears out.

Sorry, but I'm not buying the "twice the money" talk about if it came with premade gimmicks. Just look at what you get out of the box with Modern Times for the same price.

OK- I finally assembled it completely. But I still have an issue because the gimmick doesn't do what is supposed to do
when I do the change. So I have to kind of "force it" to work during the few seconds of the hand covering the deck. I still would have paid much more for a pre-made gimmick and materials for another 1 or 2 (not double like TuneHV said). Even the way I do it still looks very visual. (Great mirror practice). It does remind me of "the misdirection deck" a little, which I have and like. Still think my favorite is "rapture". I also still love that old vanishing box gimmick ( it's like Paul Harris' vanishing deck gimmick but with the box instead of the cards) I guess I can say unboxing is not bad visually but this was hard to build. And it still doesn't work right. |

Well, Penguin sells Modern Times for $23.40 and Unboxing for $19.95... and you get 2 premade gimmicks with Modern Times. So I still don't think the price would be that different if Unboxing came ready out of the box.

It should be $30 so they are discounting it for some reason to sell it through (maybe they have a lot of old stock) so its not a fair comparison on price.

Even though the gimmick is not doing exactly what it is supposed to do, I will admit I am having a lot of fun with this so far. I also did something to the gimmick that is not on the DVD that actually hides some of the "things" even better after the change. If anyone is interested you can send me a PM.

Even though I like this, I do agree with TuneHV about "Modern Times". You can show more with "Unboxing", but getting 2 ready-to-go- (im assuming 1 red and 1 blue) gimmicks with "Modern Times"-that's really great too.

I've just got this and demos look awesome on DVD. I'm pretty good at making things but I can see this being a right bugger! & if you mess it up looks like you're going to need a whole new card box & to buy some more of the gimmick. I understand it keeps cost down but a pre-made gimmick would have been so much better!

For the secret stuff I use Sempertex modelling balloons that are 100% latex, the secret stuff they give is 100% latex also so basically they are the same.
I mention this because once you use the supplies given you would be hunting for product online when in fact it is cheaply available and you may have some already. I have loads of spare card boxes I never throw them away so making up replacement or multiple gimmicks is not really a problem. I do agree a ready made gimmick would have been better but it taught me how to make these gimmicks which was worth while in itself.

Thanks for the supply tip Mark!
I've made it! Not as bad as I thought but quite tricky! Nearly went Pete Tong at one point but managed to save it with some precision exacto knife cuts. Only problem is it's not as fast as their gimmick but hopefully the hand gesture will be enough! |

A bit more tension will make it quicker, now I've made a couple I'm getting the hang of it now I understand how it all works.
My second one was a lot easier and neater once I understood how it all went together.

For latex, aside from quality modeling balloons, you can use latex surgical gloves, available at any pharmacy, even at Walmart in health department. A supply for several lifetimes for under $10. There is another readily available source of latex, that you can find at the corner drugstore: just be sure to get unlubricated...

Well, I was very excited for this effect. I disregarded the complaints regarding difficulty of the construction and well, it was true. I did get mine up and running and it is pretty sweet however. Here is my detailed review - http://ireviewmagic.weebly.com/unboxing-......nds.html
I hope this helps anyone still deciding whether to purchase this effect

I made up the gimmick this morning. As previous posters have said - this is not an easy gimmick to make and I enjoy making my own gimmicks.
Took me 3 attempts (thanks for the tip regarding latex balloons) before I got one finished that I was happy with. Now I know what I'm doing it will take half the time to make another one. I also found it beneficial to remove above 10 cards from the deck so the cards fit more snugly into the gimmick and it makes it easier to handle.
We are inclined to believe those whom we do not know because they have not yet deceived us...

I really like unboxing. It's super clean and nice looking and the gimmick is really easy to make and takes maybe half an hour to do. I'm really interested in developing a similar gimmick for an entire box.
