I have a question for all of you long time working pros in the field.

I have been debating back and forth whether or not I should get into busking. IF I do end up starting to busk it won't be for a good while so that I can have my character, set, and presentation all down 100%.

Now one thing I have been thinking of doing was the 3 Card Monte. I know it is used by a lot (or so it seems) but is it really a good idea to use the Monte while busking? I could just see it play out the wrong way!

Any one have any information or thoughts on this?

The Monte and the shell game is great in character drawing a crowd.

Do it in New Orleans and you will need bail.
Just becuase you aren't really doing it doesn't mean that some tourist passing by might think you are doing it. And Gawd help you if some undercover guy happens to be passing by. Do not pass go and do not collect $200.

Harry Anderson used this in Austin. The way he got by with it without getting busted was that he would have a police officer standing next to him while he did it. He would not allow anyone to bet on it. His presentation was structured in such a way that he took no bets. But he would say things like "I know what you are thinking -- the ace is over here, etc."

At the end, he would pass the hat, and he would say, "Now you have enjoyed my show. I haven't let you put any money down. So you know that there are several times, that if I had allowed you to bet, I could have taken you for your watch, your wallet and your firstborn. So technically, you owe me everything you have. So I would appreciate any contribution you would make to me." Or words to that effect.

This may not work everywhere, though.

I agree with you totally. When I do it, It is clear that I am not doing a gamble, but as a busker passing the hat.
Bringing me in for gambling, whould make an officer a true sucker.
