"Fifty years ago today, the red-and-white Maple Leaf design Hughes carried into the stadium became Canada's new national flag."

Oh, I am surprised! I thought it went back much further. So what was it previously--some variation of the Union Jack?

Wish we could get rid of the Union Jack. Boxing kangaroos would look better.

It is indeed a gorgeous flag. Canada's national anthem is also quite beautiful.

Both are something to be proud of.

Yes. There is a list and pictures of Canada's (and the regions of what became Canada) flags through the years here (see the Historical Flags - National Flags section):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Can......al_flags

You can see some of the proposed Canadian flags here:

Some are nice, some are pretty humorous.

Because of its shape with the tail a kangaroo would not balance well on a flag - not symmetric enough - I would suggest a vampiric koala with glowing red eyes and fangs.

And Canada has a beautiful flag, and unlike our own, no one ever doubts which country it represents.

The old flag was the Red Ensign.

. Balducci's link gives some historical versions.

The debate over the flag was acrimonious, with the Conservative opposition arguing that our soldiers and fought and died under the Red Ensign and that it was an insult to their memory to abandon their emblem. The Liberal government argued that the old flag was a colonial artifact, unbefitting an independent nation.

Rich Little made a pretty funny satire of the debate called "The Great Bear Debate" in which politicians were debating the placement of a warning on the backsides of bears. I had the 45 record back in the day, but haven't heard it in years. Wonder if it's aged well. (I can't find a performance online.)

As I recall (and I was just a kid at the time) it didn't take long for the new flag to be embraced.

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.--Yeats

My family and I went to Canada in 1965, and I remember that it was brand new. Like all new things, there were protestors both for and against...

I do still have the little flags, both new and old designs, that my dad bought me.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

And I stand in awe of this guy's singing and songwriting as well:

I feel a little blue 'cause I can't sew
There's still a lot of things that I should know

Anyone can guess
I don't know how to press
My Saturday clothes
And everyone's goin' home

I feel a little sad to watch them leave
But I'll be cool because I don't believe

The happy times are gone
I can still put on
My Saturday clothes
Every warm body knows

I've got to tell you that was a swell time
Now I'll take the butts away
And put the glasses on the tray
I'll see you all next Saturday

I feel a little off because they're gone
And if my gal were here I'd still be on

But in a week or two
There's lots of things to do
In my Saturday clothes
And everyone's gone home

I've got to tell you that was a swell time
So now I'll take the butts away
And put the glasses on the tray
I'll see you all next Saturday

I like the Canadian flag. It's simple. (I was tempted to add, "Like the Canadian people" just because the opening was there, but I like them, too!)

Canada does a lot of good things

It is just over 100 years since Canadian inventor Joseph Coyle perfected a design to prevent eggs breaking on their way to market.
