Mindpro,
In a mentalism show, if I find someone that I feel is particularly open to hypnosis, I do some. If not, I stay on script. With kids this is easy. I find kids (HS & College) are so into it, you don't really have to know much to pull off a great hypnotism show. This way I have no pressure to perform spectacular hypnotism for harder groups. Just the lack of pressure on me helps a lot too. |

Danny, a few buy it hook, line and sinker. If done well, most will question their beliefs.
I am a devout atheist. One time my wife woke me up late at night. It was dark, but in the moonlight I could see our bedroom door swinging open and shutting - over and over. For several moments I questioned my belief in the supernatural. I had put a spring on the door so it would automatically shut. My son was a baby, and had crawled out of his bed and was quietly kicking the door open over and over. We could not see him, and I had to muster the courage to examine the situation. Look at any religion (other than your own). Most people would agree that religions (other than their own) are wacky. As people, most of us HAVE to have an answer - instead of saying "I don't know." The answer does not need to be rational - and often is not. It is an illusion that people are rational, what we do is rationalize. I don't think the corporate environment is that different, they just mask their beliefs better for fear they will look silly. I do believe, if asked, many would say it is tricks, but I don't believe that to be their true feelings, which would be questioning. I really don't believe we hold any belief completely (this included). We are in conflict with different explanations, as well as societal pressure. We change our beliefs in the blink of an eye. The face we make in public is often very different than the doubt or questioning that resides in us. Of course, a few in both directions have no doubt, and they are dangerous because they are not open to being wrong. I can't be sure about this, but it is my observation of audiences as well as observing myself. In the end we are monkeys in suits. IMHO |

Your last sentence gets to the heart of what I am saying. If I said it though you would lash out at me.
I think trying to say what people believe vs what they say is tricky. It usually is a way to bring us to a predetermined conclusion. Not bad not good just is. I hope you get to the place you need. I am glad your family is at a place that asked you to do this as you want. The most important part of the whole equation I'd family and having to balance that with the challenges of a son needing that amount of attention is tough. Good on you for being that dad. Please don't let this message get lost in the misunderstanding. Seems as if the most important part of the job you are nailing and that is admirable.

How about calling yourself, KC Cameron - The Hilarious Mentalist!

Not sure I'd agree with that. The expectations for "hilarious" may be even more than "comedy".

To me, it is important to at least understand the "rule" we are breaking to properly evaluate our decisions. Thinking from the customers' perspective can be very difficult unless you have had experience operating as an agent or perhaps conducted their business at one time. Insights such as this that you share are invaluable to us all. |

Yes, most performers don't have a clue or ever really take the time to learn about the bigger, all-encompassing picture. They typically don't understand the true perspectives and processes of buyers and agents. They also typically rarely attempt to see things beyond their specific type of entertainment. I've always felt this was a mistake and it is really frustrating. This is why I've always felt there is much more to being an entertainer and being in entertainment. Most aren't aware or concerned with it and are likely just performers.
There is so much more at play and to be utilized and benefit from once the bigger picture is realized and understood. It always amazes me when someone initially comes to me and says "I want to learn everything I can about being (a magician, mentalist, hypnotist, comedian, singer, in a band, a speaker, etc.) and almost always in reality they just want to learn (and settle) for the minimal needed to get by. I don't believe thinking like customer is necessarily that hard or difficult if you do it properly and understand it's significance and how to do so. In reality most don't really know or have a specific target profile customer. The tend to deal in generalities - mom's or parents of kids having a birthday, Principal of a school, Manager of a restaurant, and so one. These are not actual target profiles. So until this is understood, and one keeps dealing in generalizations, all they should really expect is general inquiries and responses, and occasional bookings. Target Profiling and Qualifying is not something that is only exclusive to agents, it is something that should be part of every performer's business operational system. What many performers don't realize is customers or bookers do it to us (as performers) all the time. They are trying to "qualify" us to be acceptable, appropriate and right for their event. Although they may not realize they are doing it, and likely aren't doing it as diligently and thoroughly as they should (because they likely don't understand or know how), it is what they are doing. Understanding these concepts, knowing how to execute them and have them in place properly can make a world of difference in one's bookings, quality of bookings and pay for your bookings. In reality this is just one example and perspective of bookers and agencies, there are so many, many more, that if taken the time to understand can help your business in so many ways - more bookings, better relations and representation by agencies, relationships with more agencies, the ability to separate yourself from the competition, better positioning, better serving the right target customers, and understanding the mentalities, perspectives and both emotional and physical elements of the mindset and booking process of buyers and prospective customers. This is all true whether you choose to use or work with agencies or not as this info, approach ans concepts can work in your business just as well without the use of agents or agencies. |
