The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin was written by Houdini to discredit Robert-Houdin for his tricks and inventions after Houdini was denied an audience with the widow of Robert-Houdin after his death. Houdini had travelled to France to meet with her to pay tribute. The material in the book had been gathered by Houdini to write a completely different book that would have honored him for his accomplishments. Most magicians disliked Houdini's book and stood in defense of Robert-Houdin.

Aside from its own questionable claims, the controversial biography "The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero" by William Kalush and Larry Sloman, discusses "The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin" and basically it states what cbusch55 posted. Houdini was known for holding grudges and being very vocal about them, so odds are he wrote the book in anger and spite. He also was no stranger to controversy and understood how it could keep one in the spotlight. The book was most likely a move in bad taste on his part. Only Houdini knows the real reason as to why he wrote the book, and 89 years of seances show... He's not talking.
