Do people really do that many tricks involving handkerchiefs these days? In looking through various tricks and routines in Bobo and Tarbell, I notice a LOT of them use a handkerchief. Clearly, handkerchiefs were more of "a thing" in the early part of the 20th century than they are now. And my initial reaction is always negative when I see that a trick involves a hanky.
Are there many folks here who like hanky tricks and recommend them? Just looking for opinions. Cheers, Ken |

I too looked through Bobo and thought I would never use handkerchiefs in my coin magic...
Then I read Expansion of Texture in the Coin Classics section, and went out to buy a handkerchief the next day! That is a truly fantastic effect! I don't see much point in using a handkerchief for vanishes, as that can be done without. But it makes perfect sense to use them for penetration effects. Also, look at the handkerchief through arm effect in Mark Wilson's Encyclopaedia of Magic. It is a great effect and leads perfectly into coin and handkerchief effects. |

Expansion of texture is a great routine. Follow that with copper or silver penetration and a copper/silver transposition in a spectator's hand, and you have a great routine. If you can't find the tricks in Bobo, check out my take and Roth's take in the NYCMS dvd series.
S.E.M. (The Sun, the Moon, and the Earth) is a sun and moon routine unlike any other. Limited to 100 sets, here is the promo:

What would Harry Blackstone (Senior AND Junior!) have done, if they couldn't have borrowed a gentleman's handkerchief?!!!?
I've been doing EXPANSION OF TEXTURE SINCE 1951! AND THE COPPER OR SILVER PENETRATION GOES "WITH IT". And, I, too, follow with the copper/silver in spectator's hand. I start the bit with Jack Chanin's "TV Production" (sometimes called the "Perpetual Production). I produce a silver dollar and a penny. Then, with a "Gypsy Switch" the penny changes into a Sudbury dollar size penny. With the hanky, (a polyester) I can then segue into hanky knots, including the ancient Seymour Davis wand penetration through the hanky. Oh! the hanky is sometimes used for novelty "napkin" folds, including Quentin Reynold's "Five minutes with a handkerchief". With one more hanky, I can do the square knot vanish (the young guys call it the Slydini Knots.) Ken...Tarbell has some great hanky knots in Volume I. PM, me.

...after I clean my glasses with that cloth ...I find a coin
And another..... And then perhaps something larger. A bit less than 40 years ago I started using those great routines with hankies found in Bobo's book.

In the beginning it was stated that sometimes handkerchiefs are not used as much. I find dinner napkins a perfect prop to use when you do magic during or after dinner.

I use a bandana for a number of effects -- penetration with coins; penetration with selected card; ring-through-string under cover of the bandana; and safety-pin pull across the folded bandana. (I am the only person I know who still does this, though I saw it recently in Tarbell.....)
When I think of it, I refer to my bandana as "Carlos Bandana," but this goes over most people's heads anymore.... Even the Woodstock generation's memories are beginning to fade.... |

Yes~ Joe, Those safety pin bits still play, and I often segue from the "zipper" effect with the bandanna, into Piff Paff Poof. I knew Jerry Andrus, but, never got "into" his wonderful linking pin work.
The problem is "finding" big pins today that are suitable. (My pins are over 50 years old!) I don't think doing piff paff poof with VELCRO, would "play"! The novelty Napkin Folds that I mentioned above, include the Rabbit, the Mickey Mouse "ears" (Just do the brassiere fold and put it on head as you sing M I C -- K E Y -- M O U S E ! The ancient "FATIMA" still plays, too! About 60 years ago, Tom Osborne published a little booklet with the napkin folds he used in his act. I'm sure it's OP, but, check with the old used book dealers.

Thanks for the reminder and memories. I like to do bits with props as you mentioned Been a while since I used the Mouse/Bra bit. If memory is working I went from Mickey to Minnie in my Patter. Also back in my early magic days I learned the perpetual coin (plus surprises) in a Chanin lecture.

Dick, you can still buy what I would call "mid-sized" pins at a Walmart, K-Mart, or Target --- but I recently learned that not all pins are created equal! Some are manufactured in a way that allows unlinking, but prohibits the hanky pull. (And, yes, I found this out the hard way! Agggh!)
Sorry for taking this thread away from coins. I DO use the bandana with coins quite a bit….. |

I use a bandanna as well, and I have a see thru scarf thing I bought at a thrift shop for doing Coins thru silk, which makes a good follow up to a coin production.
If you see Gary Kurtz vanish a jumbo coin into a Handkerchief you will want to get one |

Joe...Ken, the OP started the thread off with handkerchiefs. Then, a few of us, because Ken is "working his way" through the Bobo book, mentioned a few coin routines that involved hankys Michael Rubinstein mentioned that cloth napkins could be used in lieu of hankys, vinsmagic mentioned the little mouse puppet, you mentioned coin bits and added the safety pin bit, I added some more pin stuff and hanky folds,I think I also mentioned hanky knots ETC.
Hey Joe, I don't see any problem. Ken started it off with HANKIES. Several of us mentioned hankies with coins, vinsmagic mentioned the moue puppet, you mentioned coins and pins, I added some more coin, pin hanky folds hanky knots ETC~! I think I threw in the Seymour Davis wand or pencil, or chopstick penetration of a hanky. I think we may have opened Ken's eyes to the many uses of hankies, and we really have only scratched the surface. Too many young magicians, today, only learn the latest "catalog" tricks. Too many ignore Tarbell, Martin Gardner, et al. as 'old fashioned'. ' Then at a party, they don't have any of those magic shop props, and they can't do ANYTHING. BTW There are lots of card tricks that involve hankies, too. Remember the frc under a hank with the inverted deck, or the hanky penetration thru a hanky? Whether it's the "main prop" or just an accessory in a performance, a hanky is very useful. --and inexpensive. 1

I wrote good patter built around the hanky penetrating hanky effect -- I will PM it to you. But for hanky through hanky, I find that I have to use two silks, because if I use two cotton handkerchiefs or two bandanas, the "knots" bunch themselves together so tightly that the only way to undo them is to "massage" the knots, and then it quickly loses its impact....
I agree with you about Tarbell and Gardner; great resources. Someone once said (I can't remember who it was) on one of these threads that most of the magic that has been published as "new" in the last fifty years is derivative of something that is already in Tarbell. I didn't necessarily believe it, but the more I go through Tarbell the more I can see where that person was coming from.... |

I'm always interested in patter and presentation! When I was breaking in, as a teenager, the old timers always stressed: "It's not WHAT you do! --It's HOW you do it!" So, I learned early about the importance of patter and presentation.
At my age, I've seen and heard a lot! Some, good, some GREAT, and some, AWFUL! Being retired, I don't always have the motivation to do research, BUT, I also want, at least, to keep an open mind. So, yes, I would appreciate your sharing! Actually, I meant to say "card penetration through a hanky". But, I also like "hanky through hanky". The Dissolving Knot (Tarbell) as used in the Al Baker Hanky Penetration through spectator's arm, in Tarbell)is definitely a useful principle. I first learned to use it as a silk through rope. --It's bit more colorful with 2 silks (or "polys"). I learned the Vanishing Square Knot (nowadays called the "Slydini Knots") with two bandannas. I can still do it with cotton bandannas, but, I use two 'polys' in the show. --Less friction) I like your term (massage)! I started with Tarbell, and I helped (in a small way)to get the Gardner Encyclopedia, published. I agree with whoever made the point that much or most of the "new" tricks, came from those old books. There's an old story about a magician wandering into the library at the Magic Castle. He "found" a younger magician with a pad of paper and a pile of "old" magic books, like Tarbell, etc. "Are you looking for tricks for your show?" "No, I'm going on a lecture tour, and need some good tricks." Karrell Fox (some years ago) got a booking for a young Detroit magician, to play a week in a shopping mall in central Ohio. It was a pre Christmas promotion. The young fellow phoned Karrell, the next day, and said, "Please ship your "Modern Cabinet" quick! They want me to produce Santa." Karrell said, "It would cost as much to ship that "box" as you're making all week! Go to one of the dry goods stores, buy two sheets, have them sewn together, and do the "wraparound" from Tarbell." When Karrell died, he had sold his entire, and rather extensive library, except for the books he had personally written AND, "TARBELL", plus the RICE "ENCYDLOPEDIA OF SILKS" r
