Sam, great opening. Really enjoyable.
My ex occasionally opened birthday parties with a musical routine that was very visual, full of productions etc. It looked great. And we never worked together so I never had to do the three trips to the car.

Frankie, you mentioned using flowers. What I sometimes use as my opening is a production of a bouquet of feather flowers that I learned from Richard Hughes. It is called Hoopla. It is a flashy production of eye candy that always oohs and aahs. Here is a video of Richard doing this:
"Those who simply walk in others' tracks leave no footprints."

Jimmy! That's exactly what I'm looking for. But do you wear a jacket? I'd need a jacket for that, right?

No, you will not have to wear a jacket for that, Frankie.

Frankie,
This was a great post, it's something I've struggled with over the years. I wanted a big flashy start, but without too much cheese. I don't really have any suggestions, I just wanted to thank you for posting this, it's been great to read the responses Thanks again! Kevin |

Kevin! Thank you so much for that. What a nice message. Seriously.
It's funny. When someone first told me about this forum years ago, I didn't quote get it. My first reaction was, "But aren't all magicians competing with each other for work?" Not if they're in different parts of the world, of course. But I didn't quite understand why people would share their performance secrets/routines. Then again, I wasn't really performing all that much then. NOW I get it. It's not really a risky gesture. When people hire you, they're hiring YOU, the magician, the personality. It's not like I didn't know the tricks were just tool. I've always known that. But now I see that offering suggestions and help to other workers is not dangerous! People hire Zuch because he's Zuch, Tommy because he's Tommy, and Harris because he's Harris. We post videos of ourselves. It's all out there for everyone to see. Use any of it if you can. Just sharing tools. Love this. Thanks, all! |

I used Tony Clark's Black & White Gloves to Streamer for years. It's super easy and very visual. Just take off your gloves and toss them in the air. They transform into a 12' bland and white streamer. Always got great reactions with it. I personally wouldn't use it for kids say older than 8. But that's just me.

"Bland and white"! I love it. That was supposed to be "black"
You can see it in action on my Episode 1 of Christopher T. Magician Presents series on YouTube |

I open with a "rules," bit... for the last rule I produce a thumbtip streamer and say, "the last thing to remember about a magic show is that absolutely anything can happen. And you wouldn't want to miss something cool because you weren't paying attention to me. So keep your eyes up here and we'll have a great time!" This is probably word for word from James Munton, though he does it with a hot book.
Anyway - for the really big, visual part... I used to just end it there, but now I use Christopher T. Magician's "go/grow" production vase routine, using the streamer I had just produced during the rules. I don't do the whole vanishing/reappearing bit with the thumbtip streamer, just the finale part. Not only does it flow perfectly, but it's super quick, visual and funny, which sets the stage for the rest of the show (lots of magician in trouble stuff). That routine, BTW, is on his DVD, Live From The Living Room, which is the best magic purchase I've made in years.

Well, I have opened with the "color changing silk thru the hand" for about 60 years. I use it for adults, young and old, and "children of all ages".
It introduces ME to the audience,it surprises, entertains,--and fools them. It sets the tone of the show. It gets applause without asking for applause! I learned the basic handling from Senor MARDO, in 1947. I had bought a 75 cent dye tube at Bob Stull's shop in San Francisco, and Mardo was kind enough to do a bit of mentoring. (I was 16) I have worn out a "few" silks, and also a few gimmicks since then. It took a year of two to develop a presentation. I did. I would not change to any other trick. The EFFECT is VISUAL. The PROPS are VISIBLE. The trick is ANGLE PROOF. The EFFECT is VERSATILE. The PROPS are RECOGNIZABLE. The SET UP is MINIMAL. NO TABLE is needed. It's spot adaptable. 'The PROPS PACK SMALL, LIGHT, and PLAY BIG. Dye tubes are now $10.00! Silks are no longer $.75! Of course my show price reflects that!

Thank you, Dick. That routine has been on my TO DO list for months. Every time I see a magician perform it, I'm like, Ugh! Buy a dye tube and construct a routine already!
That's so much more my style, Dick. I've opened with Professors Nightmare, Chop Cup, jumbo 3 Card Monte, all routines that showcase my personality. Not all that visual compared to productions, though. I think I've found my compromise!!! Thank you! |

I want my Magic show to build, so I perform a visual simple opener without music or volunteers. I usually save my Bigger more Flashy Magic to Music routine for the last half or ending of my Show. What ever works for you.
