I was eight years old when Star Trek first rocked my world. But I remember watching the first episode as vividly as I remember yesterday afternoon. I was sitting in front of the television with my mind reeling and every sense on fire. What a beautiful thing Star Trek was! I so clearly recall being challenged and delighted at the world it opened to me.
A space ship, exploring strange galaxies for FIVE YEARS? Alien life forms? Hot girls in little skirts? When I heard the first three notes of that theme my attention was fixed upon the little screen and I'm reasonably sure I didn't even breathe until the Enterprise and it's gallant crew and done battle, explored "new frontiers" and shown me places and ideas that had never even occurred to me. I was one of the people who wrote to the network begging them to reconsider cancelling the "best thing EVER on television." I was gratified when they listened to me and Star Trek limped into another season. Spock was the most compelling character. Kirk? He was always "straight...ahead...everyone." But Spock? He kept me guessing because I could sense that the human half was itching to get out but had been locked down under that stone faced Vulcan will. And now Spock is gone. **sigh** The world is just a little poorer today...a little sadder...just a tiny bit greyer. Safe journey to you, Leonard Nimoy. Boldly go into your new frontier. Thank you for showing me how beautiful dreams could be. David
