Hi fellow kid show performers!
I have a 3-hour walkaround gig coming up, and wanted to get some ideas of what are your favorite effects for this type... to add to my current effects. I'm not a 'sleight-guy', so simple is good. I currently have: Sponge bunnies Bunny paddle Photography deck penetration frame sponge balls hot rod Svengali Deck Would like to add to the above list. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance! Doug R Salt Lake City |

Professor's Nightmare.
Any thumb-tip vanish and reproduction, or a thumb-tip blendo. A balloon swallow - I get ten minutes out of that. Five Minutes with a Pocket Hanky (Quentin Reynolds) I never do a show without a hanky and a thumb-tip.

TT is great - I use the stop hat silk and bunny silk. If you have a fire wallet, kids love fire. I also do the ring on chain, simple effect, but gives kids a chance to "make the magic happen". The sponge bunnies is a killer, but you'll have them lining up - me next, me next! There is also a simple trick using two cards in plastic windows called the stoplight trick - simple again, but kids love it.

2 colores super balls or (Fs) and a silk
3 inch coin manipulation with a kicker Sleight of hand with a few coins. A simple penny becomes a dime is magic to a kid. A large ring on a P-ll is magic. Tell themk to take it to the lost and found for a reward.

Hey Doug! For kids, I always use the following:
Dlites from ears and armpits Chop cup (full size with Rings n Things giant load balls). Can be done in the hands and it kills. Turbo Stick--X routine, then end with child's name Sponge balls sponge balls sponge balls Ambitious card Crazy mans handcuffs Any sort of hot rod (I've actually followed up Turbo Stick with a hot rod trick and the audience really doesn't see them as similar). Hope this helps! |

I do some of the stuff mentioned already, but try Photoshop - I use it to make a Hersheys's kiss apear from a photo, you just have to "over explain" the concept so they get and apreciate what will happen. Cardtoon is great. And you could even do paper balls over the head and teach them how to do it. If you bring a suitcase table or briefcase table (it may or may not be practical) but that would give you more options cause you could do some bigger stuff if you want, like Misers Dream or other stuff you can't really carry on you.

Sponge balls, and a TT are great for kids. For older kids, scotch and soda, flipper coins, professor's nightmare, hat tears, ring off rope. I have used some card packet tricks, but be careful because some kids tend to reach for the cards. Anything that happens in there hands, magnifies the effect 10 times over.

If it's indoors I'd use the D'Lites--multicolors if you can afford it. Pen-thru-bill works really well with kids too. If you do sponge bunnies without tables, be careful....you may lose most of them.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

I do: strolling miser's dream; sponge balls; chop cup-like routine (except cup isn't gimmicked); cut and restored rope (my routine doesn't require actually cutting of the rope, and resets automatically at the end, like Prof. Nightmare); one coin routine; Judy the Mouse.

Hey Noland! What size cup/bucket do you use for a strolling misers dream?
|
noland Veteran user 350 Posts |
My strolling miser's bucket is a light-weight metal canister that's 7 inches high and 4 inches in diameter. I think I bought it at Target. When I stroll, I carry a shoulder bag on a strap with the bucket and a few additional props inside. Alternatively, I often stroll carrying a very small, light-weight tripod table with the bag clipped to the back of the table (like a servante), with the bucket in the bag. The bag actually unclips from the table, and holds the collapsed table inside when I'm traveling to the venue. By the way, I got the idea for doing miser's dream in a strolling setting from the Dutch street/festival magician, Robert Blake.

I use a TT and a small super soft sponge bunny, mandmdo the "pull a rabbit from a hat" trick and let them keep the bunny,,also thumb tip coils using bills that have my logo on them,,the keep the streamer/ coil and bill.
The hat tear done as a "do as I do" effect. The tiny magic coloring book that fits in your pocket. |
