I've seen Helder perform live on several occasions. Yes, he can really do these wonderful things. And audiences love him.

Is there a book, lecture note or DVD where he teaches these techniques? I have never seen card magic/mentalism so raw and powerful like this in a long time.
Wow! |

It's an excellent DVD. My favorite part is when he's asked what is his most important advice about magic. He says: "The most important advice about magic is that YOU SUCK. No matter how good you are, you SUCK. You always have to keep on getting better." He also gives advice about routine structure that I learned a lot from. I think someone in your position might benefit more from that than from the routines themselves. His book is out of print and very hard to find. |

I like that "You Suck" quote. Its a good mindset to be in.
Reality is a real killjoy.

You should also note that while Helder has released some of his wonderful material, he does not give permission to perform it. Rather, it is for purposes of study and inspiration only.

Definitely got my interest in sourcing out his materials to read, learn and be inspired. It has been a long time since I saw a card magic/mentalism act that is so intriguing and impossible.
His "you suck" thinking is brilliant. Keeps us humble and ready to learn. Thanks for sharing, Aaron Sterling. |

I think it's odd, how the magic is strong and well thought out, while the actual talk is as bland and as generic as can be. He really doesn't have a any content. Thankfully the magic is so strong that the shallowness of the talk gets ignored.

Roland, I guess the magic IS his content. Kept me on the edge of my seats though.
But that's only my guess maybe some magicians only talk through their magic. |

I believe that he had at least 3 DVDs release over the years, including Small Miracles, Red Mirror and another one I saw rarely discussed, plus some instant download by Dan and Dave. Currently you can visit his new web site www.halfhalfman.com where he regular bi-monthly magic periodicals published with some of the greatest mind in magic. Also he just release a limited 250 copies of his latest book 'Crescendo' there as well. I hope that the above information can help.

On the other hand, based on his interview in his Red Mirror DVD. You can tell that his magic learning root is based on Spanish School of Magic, currently lead by Maestro Juan Tamariz and many other great Spanish close up magicians. When discussed about the Spanish School, a few books in my humble opinion is a must read including The Five Points, The Magic Way written by Juan Tamariz. Also The Magic of Ascanio Vol 1 - The Structural Conception of Magic is basically the foundation / corner stone of Spanish School of Magic. Unfortunately it is currently out of print for 2 years now. For me myself, the Ascanio book is one of the best book written in the topic of magic theory, ever. Hope it helps.

His new project halfhalfman is amazing. He's also finished a new book and it's going to come out, hopefully, within this year.
Cheers, Mike |
