From Sherlock Jr. 1924, the great Buster Keaton:
How?

The board behind is hinged at the top, and can be lifted back. The actor is lying on his (her?) belly, and after Keaton jumps through he is lowered back into position and walks away. Really takes some athleticism and timing!

The actor looks like Joe Keaton, Buster's father, who with his wife and son Buster, had a knockabout vaudeville act.
Your theory sound reasonable to me. With a modicum of careful camera editing, that seems plausible.

I'm with Starrpower. At 0:21 you see the legs bulge out the skirt as they reenter the stage.

Good one on Ford West, Marlin. How did you find that out?
The more I think about it, the actor can't be lying on a board. I think he must have been held up horizontally behind the fence by men holding up his legs.

On Mar 6, 2015, landmark wrote: "For the scene where Sherlock Jr., escaping some gangsters, leaps headfirst through the body of his assistant, Gillette (who is disguised as an old lady selling neckties), and disappears, Buster Keaton used an old magician's trick. Prior to the trick, Gillette is seen standing with his back against a wooden fence. A section of the fence was sawed out and placed on hinges, so that it opened up and back like a garage door. Ford West (the actor playing Gillette) was then strapped to the underside of the cutaway section, so that when it was opened, West's body was hanging parallel to the ground, but his head and arms stuck out through the upper part of the opening in the fence. The dress and open suitcase were then hung from West's shoulders, so that they hung down in front of the fence, concealing the opening. Both the dress and the suitcase had holes cut in them. With the cameras rolling, Keaton leaped headfirst straight through the hole in the suitcase, the hole in the dress, and the opening in the fence. (He later recalled that he "landed face-first in the dirt" on the other side.) The cutaway fence section was then swung down to close the opening, so that West's body landed perfectly inside the dress. Attendants on the other side of the fence cut the straps holding West's torso and feet to the cutaway section, and West stepped away from the fence as if nothing had happened. In the film, you can see West reach behind his back to close the opening in the dress as he steps from the fence. If you look closely, you can also see the outline of the cutaway section in the fence." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0015324/trivia |

I never said he was lying on a board. I said "on his belly", meaning in a prone position. The answer given above is reasonable.

Great illusion and little drama anyway. Thanks.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Here's one more incredible scene.
This is from Seven Chances. Keaton is being chased by a horde of would-be brides; but he must get to his one true love and wed her by 7pm if he is to inherit seven million dollars.

I am so glad that there are others here who appreciate the old timers. They were so very clever and took incredible chances just to entertain. We are fortunate to live in an age where we can actually see what someone did 100 years ago, an advantage they did not have.

Nice to see that they recycled those rocks for Star Trek scenery 40 years later

Whoa. It just occurred to me that the time gap between Seven Chances and Star Trek is small than between Star Trek and today. I'm feeling a bit weird about that.

No way!!
Way!!!! Some of the rock sequence looks like double exposure/process screen, but the rest I think is pretty real.

I only took one quick look in small screen size, but I was wondering if some rocks were animated.

I'm surprised that Slim hasn't offered these film clips as further "proof" of the paranormal.
