What really could use some closure here, however, is the question posed by TheDirectionalist above and--I am certain--pondered by most of us in the magic community, namely, "Why just stop making what so many have praised as the best marked deck ever created?" Sorry if the earlier explanation for why we are stopping the collab wasn't satisfying, and trust me no-one likes chewing through some magic drama more than me - Sadly there isn't much to chew on here. I think we did strike gold with the ELITES/ALPHAS project in a way, my unique OMS and DMC's very particular aesthetic and direction lined up just right. It's always meant a lot to me that people enjoyed the decks and used them to create their own moments of magic with punters, clients, friends and family. That was always the goal, to make a product that was very easy to use but very powerful in what it actually did - so if you are a beginner, it will make magic easy and accessible to you, but if you are a serious wizard, then you can take the deck on Fool Us and perform at the absolute highest level. I think we managed that? It's a pretty cool deck anyway. After so long working on the same project though I think we were just pulling in different directions, and it made sense after a decade to stop being tied to what we had done before and push on to the next steps. Not very exciting, sorry. Quote:

I am definitely part of the chorus that is lamenting the demise of the Elites, but I get the sense that you know this is a winning direction, in marked deck design, and hopefully the creation of more decks in the same vein are in your plans. However, I couldn’t risk that being a rash assumption, so I have therefore “bought up” on Elite decks to make sure my personal stock covers me for as long as it takes for you to design yet another killer marked deck. Good luck with whatever you pursue, but PLEASE make sure we haven’t seen the end of this marking system. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE.

Was lucky to order a bunch more, and a dinged brick with some beautiful decks in it!
Still my favourites, but can't wait to see what other great stuff Phill comes up with. |

FYI - As fellow Café member geggy thoughtfully posted here back on May 20, Mr. Money-Coutts' own website still lists a few Elites for sale, notably the Lagoon (pale green) and Royale (bright red) editions. See link here below.

Re: "...the password should not be too difficult for anyone even remotely interested in card magic!!" Agreed. I stumbled for a minute before realizing that the spelling of DV's surname in all lowercase had been specified. --Just getting more and more careless in my old age, I guess....

Having pondered the whole issue of the DMC Elites decks' demise for a full calendar month now, and having taken particular notice of Phill's broad, visual "S-h-h-h" to his fellow mages here on the Café, I have begun to suspect that perhaps he may be planning to channel his talents and energy into a product more narrowly aimed at an "inner circle" of serious magicians, rather than the public at large. Consider: How much of their effectiveness as a magic tool have the Elites lost forever while becoming so popular and having so many of their clever secrets laid bare on Amazon, eBay and major magic sites such as Penguin, VI, Hocus Pocus and others?
It would not surprise me in the slightest if the famously creative Mr. P. Smith were to start offering up a new line of cards on a semi-private website of his own, catering more to magicians who earn at least some of their bread and cheese from performing for others, rather than the merely curious with only a casual interest in the Howie Diddits of the tricks they watch for free on YouTube. Only time will tell, of course. We can but hope that that time will come sooner rather than later.

>>> UPDATE ON NEW DMC DECK DESIGNS <<<
In a promotional email that I received today from DMC himself (that is, Drummond Money-Coutts), he announced the following: "... for the next ten days EVERY SINGLE DECK on the DMC store will be available with a 40% DISCOUNT - simply use the code "MAGICLIVE40" at checkout. These are the last few boxes of ELITES and ALPHAS that will EVER BE PRINTED with this precise back design. Once they're gone, they are collectors' items forevermore - so grab as many as you'd like! And then ... just get yourselves ready for the new DMC deck designs, coming soon." So ... I've been completing my personal collection of the "old" DMC Elites decks as well as I've been able, and I'll be eagerly awaiting the promised "new" designs, as I expect many others will too. Stay tuned!

Hi everyone! Hope all safe and well.
Yes, new ALPHAS and ELITES designs are coming very soon, and there's also a private Facebook group to discuss ALPHAS routine ideas and concepts: https://www.facebook.com/groups/dmcalphas ... we just launched the new ALPHAS V3 at Magic Live (every single attendee was gifted a deck at registration), and will be releasing the new design some time in early October. Can't wait to have these into the world. Best, - DMC. |

You'll definitely want to join the FB group (as I did a few minutes ago) if you want to keep up on all the latest developments. It took me a few minutes to get used to the new markings, but once I got locked-in on the suits, it was all good after that. I've never really been into the Alphas up till now, but I think I'm gonna have to give them another try as well. --Definitely an "old dog/new tricks" thing for a 'vintage' guy like me, however, so wish me luck!

So glad I stocked up on the optical marking system versions! I can’t get on board with the new design and it looks a lot more obvious to me?! Could just be me though of course :-D

I agree that parts of the new design look more obvious, that is, less well camouflaged and open to spectator discovery (like the number 4). But then again, other aspects are giving some people the "squints," like differentiating the very similar trefoil-based clubs and spades markings. Ultimately, I suppose the marketplace will determine how successful the new designs are judged to be. --And BTW, has any credit been given to whoever designed the so-called "portcullis" marking system? Was it PS, DMC himself, or someone else?

The Kings & Crooks Lion logo shown in the corner of the teaser images shown on FB lead me to believe that the new decks are designed by Lee McKenzie, though that has not been expressly stated. I'd be surprised if it wasn't though.

Thanks, Mercury52! Guess I'll run with that info for now. Perhaps LM will get credit on the bottom of the tuck boxes like PS? Only time will tell, I guess.
