Hello Dale,
just had an hour to go through your PDF. First of all congratulations! I think this is a great addition to the market! As I can see in the header you intend to sell the magazine for 10 $ per issue and after reading the PDF I have to tell you that this is a lot of bang for the bug! Most of the effects are rock solid and I especially love the subtilities, like the "In Plain Sight" part, this is so bold but just genius. I also like the order of the effects, it was nice to read, since you found the right balance of weaker and stronger effects, so it doesn't get boring to read and the reader stays exited. What I am missing at the end of the effect description is the origin of the effect and the source of props for the effect (Tarbell, or whatever book). For hardcore veterans it is not a problem to know what a "Color Vision" based effect is, but your price will also attract beginners and they might feel a little left alone with this limited information. I'd also suggest to have an index and the pages numbered, it makes things easier for people to reread and loacate things. For an issue featuring TC Tahoe, I was missing a little side information about TC Tahoe, who is he, what has he done for the magic community, perhaps an interview. Thanks for giving me the oportunity to preview this. Regards Michael Sturm |

I was lucky enough to get a free copy of this special T C Tahoe edition of "The New Other Stuff" and I was really impressed. I know of Mr Tahoe by reputation only - as far as I know he wrote a pretty definitive work on readings with colours. There is a wide variety of material running (rather fittingly) the full spectrum from dark and spooky to light-hearted and from relatively straight mentalism to more magickal occurrences.
There are some unconventional takes on standards of mentalism (bank night, confabulation) along with plenty of asides, anecdotes and ideas. The emphasis here is on stories and presentations, so familiarity with methods is often assumed - but I feel this is a strength rather than a weakness, as the ebook never gets bogged down in describing routines step by step. I'm not sure there is anything here that I would pick up and perform as it stands - and I feel that would be missing the point of the publication anyway - but there are touches, concepts and bits of business that have sparked ideas in my mind, and that's really what I look for in any publication now. There's a lovely bit of scripting for anyone who performs a haunted key in here, that I REALLY like and an (apparently) very simple A/B choice that can tell you a huge amount about a sitter, something that I had never considered before. It's presented as a throwaway effect, but I think it's capable of much more. Anyway, suffice to say, I would highly recommend this magazine. Well worth $10. I will certainly be picking up issue 2 when it arrives. But I do feel like this will be a tough act to follow! I don't know how they will match the range and quality of ideas contained in this first edition.

I welcome a new magazine to our small bizarre community. Since the demise of the Mystic Menagerie there seems to be only the quarterly Psycrets, a members only publication for the British Society of Mystery Entertainers. I am familiar the name of Dale Hildebrandt. His haunted key work is some of the most respected in the field. I am also familiar with some of T C Tahoe's material. His book In the Play of Shadows contains some very nice Tarot routines. The premier issue of the quarterly The New Other Stuff is a One Man Issue featuring professional material from Tahoe's working repertoire, along with thoughts and fascinating anecdotes as if we were listening to the performer reminisce. The methods are all quite simple, but the details show experience from real world performance. I also enjoyed the variety of material, from storytelling, to mystical, to séance, to classic mentalism, to (apparently) impromptu, to Christmas Holiday themed, to simple but powerful tips for the professional on packaging and coding. I found material that I will use - - his introduction for the Haunted Key, for example. What more could I ask for? The pricing should encourage everyone in our field to support this new quarterly publication.

When I agreed to review the New Other Stuff I wasn’t sure what to expect. I asked the cadavers what they thought and they were not sure either. When the Dead are clueless, you have to give it a look for yourself, so I did.
Like every magic magazine, there are things I liked, things I loved, and things that really did not resonate with a séanced spirit. New Other Stuff does not give a lot of information on the actual effect, but for most magicians that is not a problem because most will be familiar with the effects listed. What you will find is a sharing of storyline to revive some of the effects that you may have shelved, such as the Mystery Vase or paddle move. You will also get advice from actual performance and will probably see yourself in some instances such as The Worst Introduction Ever. Your situation may not be exactly the same but I bet, if you have performed much, you have been in a similar situation. I like that the magazine is not just a list of tricks or a collection of stories but also gives some valuable performance tips and personal information. For me, the benefit was the inspiration received from the reading. As I read the articles, I could imagine other workings for these effects and wanted to dust some of them off. One of my favorite effects was the Ghost in the Shell, a haunted house routine that caught me off guard, and the introductory riddle for the Haunted Key routine. The only disappointment was that I wished some of the personal experience sharing, such as The Worst Introduction Ever had told a little more. 37 pages for $10.00 is not a bad deal and if you find one usable story or tip, then it is a good value. I read New Other Stuff to the cadavers, they love to be read to, and overall, the cadavers give four out of five trocars. (Only the Reaper gets five trocars so that is pretty good.)
