No provincial or state government in North America had been in power as long as the Alberta Progressive Conservatives. And they were knocked off by the left-leaning New Democratic Party, which now has a majority government. We're all in a period of stunned anticipation.

Has Canada had women on your paper (now plastic) money, other than British royalty?

^^^^^It looks like an old Irish Sweepstakes Ticket^^^^^^ Only different. Is that an unopened bag of "Jelly Beans" on the bottom left?

No, not jelly beans, it is a depiction of a 1929 newspaper headline that reads "Women are Persons".
Interested persons can read about the Famous Five here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Famous_Five_%28Canada%29

If there is such a thing I would coin a phrase (pun intended) :Ugly Money". Guess it is just what one is use too. I am sure many like it and after looking at it a while I guess it is ok to spend. What is the value of that currency? In dollars and cents.

Here's a coin with Laura Secord.
Who is Laura Secord? Thanks for asking. She's the Canadian Paul Revere. She warned the Canadians/British that the Americans were planning a raid in the war of 1812. Unlike Revere, she didn't ride a horse; she walked. Also unlike Revere, she arrived in time. And unlike Revere, she's not that famous. And Revere gets a much more dramatic Wikipedia entry too

Coins don't count. U.S. has women on coins, as well.
Actually, we do change our currency quite frequently, but not the major components like who is featured on the bill. As for Laura Secord, perhaps it would help if a famous poet wrote about her. |

I tried once.
Listen children, don't be bored as I sing of the walk of Laura Secord Doesn't quite have the right ring to it.

So it IS a BIG difference, but not in the way you thought. FWIW, women have appeared on the front of our bills as well. Lastly, I think I already said we change designs on our bills (much) more often than you do. So it would not surprise me if they changed that design sooner rather than later.

There is debate in Canada over the (lack of) inclusion of women and First Nations on our money. This is something that most of the world is grappling with.
When we let old white men tell our history, we get the stories of dead white men. Hardly surprising, eh?

It's been white men (not always old) who were largely responsible for the formation of our nation (USA), so it stands to reason they are most honored (if one can say that being on money is an honor, which I think it is intended to be). We also tend to use faces of people who are historical figures from at least a century ago. The most recent is Wilson and he is on a bill that is really not used.
