A grandfather of mine was a magician before me, but his career ended 20 years ago (just before I was born) when he got in to a bad accident, He can no longer close is right hand all the way and is quite restricted on movement. It was hard to get him to try to teach me due to his arrogance and negativity towards his magic since it was his career, all of his life. After his magic, he really lost his personality, so my family has told me. Finally, he's started to open up to me more and began talking more about the things he use to do while working out of a restaurant in Miami called the Forge. A year ago, he taught me Derek Dingle's Color Stunner (Triumph to Color Changing Deck) which was pretty clever, I thought. I've continued to practice that and now just yesterday he reminded me, that trick and the "Anglo-American Coin Assembly" always use to "floor people." He said again and again how much he loved doing those tricks. I'll be buying Dingle's books sometime soon.. But out of curiosity, can anyone tell me what the Anglo American coin assembly is like? (Not how it's done, but how it's performed, how good or bad an effect it is?) I couldn't find any performances of it on YouTube, or anything of the sort.
I'd love to know a little bit about it. Thanks! |

Not very important, but just to keep the record straight --- I wrote Dingle's Deception around 1969 - about 27 years before 1996! (It's re-written, updated, etc.) in LORAYNE: THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, Volume 3. Who knows? Zephury may even buy a copy!!
Oh, as long as I'm trying to keep the record straight - there is no item titled "Anglo-American Coin Assembly" in Dingle's Deception. You may be thinking of The International Coin Trick, which IS in Dingle's Deception. Best - Harry L.

Tree, I googled it and only got three hits. The two you mention and one for THIS thread (?) Maybe Google hates me. I'd love to know where the other data/info is out there.

I'm a terrible computer person, so this confuses me (which is okay - I usually START confused!). Perhaps the confusion is due to the fact that I published Dingle's Deceptions back in 1969 or so, and then another book of Dingle's stuff came out years later - I believe Richard Kaufman published it, but really not sure. As to Tree, you're incorrect. Maybe you failed to read the entire paragraph. I did research. I was looking for a PERFORMANCE of the trick, or more details about the plot. I'm aware of where it's published. As to my grandfather, we don't speak much nor see each other that often. He doesn't even have a phone. It's relatively rare that I can track down where he is and when I do, he doesn't always wanna talk about magic.
Mr. Lorayne, we speak again. I'm aware that you wrote Dingle's Deceptions. I have yet to hold the book in my hands, but a local Café user posted it's table of contents with the "Anglo-American Coin Assembly" listed on Page 71. I don't know if those were actually the table of contents to a different book or not, but I assumed he meant Dingle's Deceptions. My grandfather only mentioned to me "Anglo Coin Assembly by Derek Dingle." I had to research more to figure out the entire name was "Anglo-American Coin Assembly." Not to be confused with the international coin trick, that's listed as page 45. Here's a link to the post I saw: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=110 Mr. Lorayne, I have the up most respect for you as a magician and an author. In the past when we communicated, I didn't exactly get a very friendly impression of you. I'm just being honest. I'm only 17 years old... 16 when we last spoke. I told you that I had a bit of money to spend and I was interested in some books. I asked about prices. When I saw such big numbers, I still wanted the books.. But, being as inexperienced as I was, I ended up getting to a brick and mortar and spending it there. You see, I didn't have enough money to buy your books after that. A mistake, I must admit. I've bought some of your books elsewhere, though I'm not apposed to buying directly from you when the time comes. I just wish that you would remain friendly with potential customers even when they don't buy your books right away. Most magicians including myself have to learn from their mistakes and cannot be simply told something such as to buy a book as appose to the shiny new trick in the shop which will probably end up collecting dust on our shelves. I hope you understand where I'm coming from. If not, maybe you should reflect back on other conversations with other users and wonder why they don't purchase books from you. They may be WRONG but by getting sarcastic and rude, you then make them want to buy books from you even less. At the end of the day, I'm sure you have plenty of customers and don't rely on us kids who are still learning to supplement your income. You're still an authority on cards and you will be til the day you die. Maybe some day we can get along. I had hoped to have more friendly conversation with you. By making this post, I don't hope for any conflict to start and I say it with honesty and all due respect. -Harley Salas |

Zephury,
From what I've read about the "Anglo-American Coin Assembly" I think your Grandfather might be remembering it 'flooring people' because it has a great sucker effect for magicians and laymen 'in the know'. There's a knack to presenting a trick like that. If you don't already do Al Schneider's 'Matrix' I'd check it out first. Especially the versions through history as Al printed them. Then maybe go for Dingle's version? Do you have a Genii subscription? If not, you should seriously consider it. You can find the Dingle trick online in the August 1975 magazine that is viewable if you're a subscriber. It is a more valuable deal than the publisher charges. |

I'm gonna look in to a Genii subscription, it seems like something I should have done a long time ago.
I have a book on Al Schneider's Matrix. I know a few different matrix effects, yes. But when my grandfather briefly describe the Anglo assembly, it seemed like it was a whole different trick, I can't recall exactly what he said, but it definitely wasn't typical. Thanks for the reply! |

Why are you getting your panties all in a twist about Mr. Lorayne? All he did was offer info about the book, there's no reason to get on his case. YOu are better off now with the info he gave you. Just being honest.

Fonda, with all due respect, Harry and I have communicated a bit over the past year or two about different things and this isn't just based off of this conversation here.

All those who know me, all over the world, even teen-agers, and over quite a few DECADES, know that the only time I'm EVER rude or nasty to anyone is if they are RUDE OR NASTY (or stupid) to me first. I never ever start any arguments, but I sure do respond.
I have more important things to keep in my mind than long ago "sillinesses," and sure as h*ll isn't anywhere near important enough for me to try to find those "sillinesses," so I really have no idea what Mr. Zephury is talking about. Why his post here - I have no idea. What in the world does this discussion re: Dingle's Deceptions, or whatever, have to do with his "friendly impression" of me?!?! Oh, yeah, he's 17 - and already a philosopher!! Please. Understand, Zephury, if you didn't get "a very friendly impression" of me - it's because I sure as heck didn't originally get "a very friendly impression" of YOU. There can be no other reason. So, let it go, will ya'? And re: the Dingle items and titles, etc., I don't have a copy of my original DINGLE'S DECEPTIONS handy - all my stuff is packed, ready for a move, so can't really answer to that. I do have my re-write in the Classic Collection volume, and I've already discussed that. Best - Harry L.
