As in music, the standards can also work in magic.
Some call them classics. Here's the classic I mentioned in the thread, Sheep in Wolf clothing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYI0SFsTarc (going to Kansas City)

Some of the standards can be great in a show, if no one else in the area is doing them. A buddy of mine is doing a great cups and balls routine, which is probably the only classic I might try. But as he is doing it, it is out for me until he has been retired five or six years.
Just as long as people remember vanishing bandanas, colouring books, and bigger wands are not and never will be classics!

Man...you really have a problem with the colouring book, Tony. What happened? Cut yourself on a page?
I know it has been done to death, but sure it is a Classic in the genre?? HÃ¥kan |

I think the reason a lot of magicians do The Coloring Book is kids really love it. I've seen a lot of magi do it and they all have there own little twist. But every time the kids are laughing and having a great time. This is probably true of a lot of tricks we think are over done. I don't think so many performers would do these effects if they didn't go over with the audience.

I love performing the Coloring Book because I have a totally unique approach. First, the patter is original and suits my personality. Second, the routine is performed to a fun, custom piece of background music. Third, it's interactive, so the kids respond to my comments. And fourth, when the "magic happens" the music becomes very mysterious and magical. This never fails to generate "oohs" and "aahs" from the crowd. (Both kids and adults).
I know ... imagine the lowly Coloring Book having such an impact! But it does. |

The colouring book goes back the Sixteenth Century, if not before. I think its staying power alone makes it a Classic of Magic.

The principal goes back to the sixteenth century, and is a good one. I enjoy Svengali decks. But the bloody colouring book will never be a classic.

Back 'THEN', it was called the "Blowing Book" The "story" is that "Hurling Bull" got his idea for the "Sevengali Deck" (Eddie Field's "pronunciation") from the Blowing Book.
I never used the Coloring Book, because "everybody" else was using it. I think TonyB2009 and I share the same thoughts!

I have a killer coloring book routine that uses all kinds of props, gags and other magic effects, the coloring book is just the glue that pulls the routine together. So even though too many people have seen it and some kids know how it works, the routine is still highly entertaining. Having said that, I do hate the fact that it's used so much and there tends to be 1 or 2 kids that actually know how it works, so I invented a prop that allows me to use a similar multi-phase routine without using a coloring book. It's turning out to be something I'm seriously considering marketing. But its also a unique packs flat or semi-flat utility prop with a lot of potential uses. I'll keep you guys posted, I'm experimenting with it in shows now and figuring it out.

Does anyone adapt the "Instant Printing" frame to fit a routine or story you use?
Since I'm in Kansas I do a Wizard of Oz thing..talking about when Dorthy opens the door and the movie goes from black and white to living color. Also in using the coloring book, or other prop, one must consider what age would this fit. Harris still 2 old to know it all

Well, the instant printing frame things are only a 2 phase thing as I understand it, as opposed to a coloring book which is at least 3 (blank, outlines, color in whatever order). Being that the book has 3 stages or phases, it gives you more opportunity to do various stuff with a routine. The magic frame thing doesn't seem impressive and would seem to be better for younger kids, but I could be wrong - there is a first time for everything.

Dan,
Exactly... Younger kids ...that is preschool..... Know your audience is as important as knowing your prop and your character. What I would present to preschool, is in many ways different than I would present to a 7:30 in the morning middle school drama class. Harris

I've seen magicians use the coloring book just to pump BOR sales for the minis.

I stopped doing the coloring book when I was hired to perform at a six-year old's party and learned just before the show that the birthday boy already owned a few tricks, including the magic coloring book. I've found that a lot of kids in my area own coloring books, and know the secret. If I were to use it these days, it would only be for kids ages 3-4.

I've never use the colouring in my performance for that same reason (over done). I have the stamp album which I feature in most of my performance.
Anyone using the stamp album? Ricky |

I do have a stamp album but I never use it. Do kids even know what a stamp is let alone why anyone would want to collect them? As far as my own kids are concerned, all messages are sent by text, lol

Oh yes.
Although I do an explanation about stamps. You can have quite a lot of fun showing the stamps of different countries and have the children laughing at some of the funny names of place that I made up just to get laughs. Ricky |
