Allan raises some very good points and areas of concern about where it's heading.
I think you just have to move forward and that most certainly may include spirit related stuff but you have to innovate and find a new voice. Diversity comes from bizarre essence as a foundation not being literal and stuck with stock in trade takes on the classics. Even though there are lots of spirit threads it may just be because that who's here talking and starting convos not a representation of content overall. True not much is written quantity wise but quality is decent. Look at Aaron Alexander Zodiac Killers perfect for a bizarre guy, and no props, neither was his ant queen routine. Talk about bizarre and engaging with zero props this guy is killing it, the full monty!! He is an example of the future in a 3 degree way. Don't worry it's always going to have a fan base. Just look at the theater market, it's been struggling forever but refuses to die and it has a market, an older clientele but one none the less(thankfully). Can't get my kid to go see a play so the future is questionable with his demographics, and they just closed a big one here last year. They have a new play format (German I think?) called Cat Killer a new concept in interactive theater. only 3 people walk through the set into different rooms with cameras straped to them watching a video of the play, when they stop in a room, the actors pick up the scene and they stop to watch then proceed through the environment. It's not dead it's just changing the channel and we have to change with it to keep current, create your own channel. I may bring a spooky seance theme show here based on that format. Sound like a good idea? Good take a proven idea and make it your own, if you don't want to reinvent to move forward just keep walking.

I haven't done it and I don't think I have the brass ones to try it yet. There's also so great ideas with Art's elemental manipulation which I think is more bizarre magick then mentalism, but I will have to learn more about that. I do think there is some stagnation in mentalism. If I see another chair test I'll screem But performance mentalism has been with us for a lot longer and there have been way more performers and creators then bizarre, that new ideas are few and far between - mainly because there is a finite list of abilities as you mentioned. There is so many myths, legends, magickal places, that have yet been unexplored that bizarre can be so much more then just haunted artificats. Even modern day myths can be used for good bizarre presentations. Have a piece of dried wheat shaft that was bent and claim it came from a crop circle. Like I said before, I too love spirit effects and I will do them, but this art can be so much more if a little more effort was put in it. Cheers, Allan |

Most of us have routines based on common objects such as books and old haunted stuff etc. that's not the issue because anything can be bizarre with the right spin. Isn't it where you go with these stories, objects and atmosphere that dictate the exploration?

I have goetic routines, a couple of druidic ones (a particular passion of mine), my Down the Hatch is a gaff less, but not prop less psychometry bit, even a comedy bizarre bit about a killer video tape (Ala Japanese Horror). I suggest you try to participate in some of Matcult's compilations as they seem to represent some of the current trends in bizarre, or at least bizarre as practiced by some of the folks here. The last tome was over 120 pages. |

A lot of my favorite routines in Bizarre have nothing to do with spirits and ghosts. some have to do with elements of earth air water and fire. others have to do with classic horror. and still more just rely on Magick principles that would be seen from practitioners of pagan magicks.........
although it is true that here on the Café things may be limited to more of a spiritualist or ghost nature that does not speak for the rest of the community that does not play here on the Café. on other forums the trends run even farther afield then I do lol. |

Some of my routines deal with ghosts, others vampires, historical tragedy, murders, and yes a lot of them deal with Death (but then again the world around my persona is that Death of one = life of another)
if you are not performing in a character or persona then such questions aren't as crucial, but if you are then realize if you upset a mythos atleast have a story of the why, audiences love back stories it allows them tiny glimpses into the inner workings of the mind or presence of the person onstage. I use the thought process of would my persona care or be interested at all in .... if the answer is no then, I most likely wouldn't do that routine

I think BM is an attempt to gain back the relevance that magical performance had, in the times when it was shamanic and story-based.
BTW, Spiritualism developed primarily in western NY state, in the early 1800s. This gave it significant overlap with Algonquian culture, which had the Shaking Tent Ritual. I've long felt that the structure of the seance was drawn directly from Shaking Tent.

To revive an old thread - ever heard of "Ian D. Montfort"? OK, not a serious approach, but I simply love him:
