Hello friends!
I finally have what I consider to be a fun/engaging Fiber Optics/C and R rope routine for children. I present it as a magician's test, something that EVERY magician must be able to do to be considered magical. Cut a rope into 2 EVEN pieces, then restore it. The routine is probably 2 and a half minutes, maybe 3. It's getting great reactions, much better than any PN routine I've performed (why do I NOT get reactions from that???! Everyone else claims to!) Anyway, after several attempts to cut the ropes evenly (always uneven) and all of the other FO moves, I FINALLY "recut" the rope into 2 equal pieces and "tie" the ropes together. I announce my success at restoring the rope. (The knot is visible in the middle of the rope.) The kids are screaming, so I say "Is this knot in the middle bothering you?" I then slide the knot down. "Better here?" Old schtick. Then I "untie" the knot so I have a really long rope and a short one. At that point, I can actually show both the long and short ropes cleanly. (I know many of you are cringing at the thought of showing a short rope, revealing the gimmick. But I have an audience member examine the rope before the show, then I add the piece after. There's absolutely no connection in their minds between the short rope and the effect. Actually, I've always wondered why anyone would go from a PN routine to a FO routine because the audience knows there's a short rope involved!). Anyway, at the end of the routine, the adults in the audience are pretty stunned, but for the kiddies...I really have no finale. It's not much of a finale, anyway. So I was hoping you could offer some suggestions for a finale? Or perhaps point me to another source? I was thinking how great it would be to switch the rope out for a stiff rope, or something like that. But I use the large Baronian 15 mm no core rope. It's pretty unique looking. Plus, how would I switch it out? Dumb idea, I think. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you! |

You might try ending with a joke/comedy climax rather than a magic one for the kids. Just a thought.

A. Rope secured with Duct tape in middle
B. Rope tie dyed Instead of old tide box on the rope C. Jump rope segment which could have some comedy moments. D. I wonder if it is possible to do cut and restored Hula Hoop.

I think your routine is getting too complicated. The first plot, from the kids' perspective is that you're trying to cut the rope into 2 equal pieces, but you fail repeatedly, with the rope(s) doing bizarre things (Fiber Optics stuff). So far, OK. The kids love it when the magician says he's going to do something, and fails. The next plot line is you're going to restore the rope, then fail again, in different ways. Still OK--again, kids love it when the magician fails. It seems to me you could end it here, as you have been doing, or you could restore the rope, maybe with the kids getting the credit (for example, because they get to say the magic word this time). This final plot line, a rope restoration, would be consistent with your overall plot. I don't see why you would now deviate into a stiff rope routine. Also, although kids love to witness failure (by the magician), too many Fiber Optics moves in the first part of the routine may lose the kids and become repetitious, because kids don't really care about seeing a whole bunch of amazing Fiber Optic magic.

Harris, I love the duct tape gag. I may have to use that!
And thanks for the input, Noland. You're right about the ending. Makes no sense. But the routine leading up to it doesn't confuse the kids because it's all magician in trouble, as you suspected. In the beginning of the routine, I'm just trying to cut the ropes in half...to no avail. First, the ends pop off. The kids reactions are wonderful. Then I can't get the ends back on, but the minute I look away, they slide down to the other end! (Try that move without looking. It's actually easier than you'd think). Then, when I fnally get them cut, there really is a gasp from the audience. But they're not even. Then some bits of business. I like the idea of the kids restoring it. Once it's undeniably uneven, I could have them say the magic words to start over, but nothing happens. Repeat. Then, do "the move" and restore the rope. Look don't see of course. I could end it there. That would be a quickie, to be sure. |
