Why are people so obsessed with this?
Who cares how its achieved.... if you have a method that works for you, then well done you....why argue every effort that's made to make it better? Just enjoy the plot... R |

But, Rus, my ACAAN is the HOLY GRAIL. So, actually, you're right. There is no need to argue. Thanks, buddy.

We all start our interest in magic or mentalism because we were curious to learn how to create that mysterious and amazing acts.
Then we start to learn the methods and most lose the astonishment. Then someone claims to have the perfect mystery, and it is, and we wonder again. That happen with all the "holy grails". Most of them appeal to magicians and mentalists because we still don't get completely that performance is for them, the real audiences, not for us. Although there is still place for "Magic for Magicians/Mentalism for Mentalism", this isn't a primary function of real world performance.

Rus I think it's because people secretly want a ACAAN method that's real magic.
To me a solid OOTW is a much, much stronger effect. |

Very well said, Amira - I think you're 100% correct with that analysis.
The OP is also right. I love learning new things, and it's fun to read about someone's new sneaky way of doing something, but at the end of the day, the stuff most people here seem to fuss about is the stuff the audience never sees. I perform what I perform, and I do so in what I personally find the most COMFORTABLE method, not necessarily the "cleanest". When you're comfortable performing, you can give your attention to presentation. And as some guy once said (and I'm not going to misquote him this time), "The presentation is the methodology". When my presentation is comfortable and strong, my methods go unnoticed, regardless of how "clean" they seem to be from a technical perspective.

I don't see the point of buying more than one ACAAN. Since this effect is mainly interesting to magicians, It seems odd to perform someone else's version of it.

Yeah, but I really DO have the Holy Grail! (and all those guys in prison really ARE innocent!)
Seriously, I developed the cleanest (from the audience’s perpective) method that I personally have ever seen. No hands, no endless shuffling, no weird instructions. I hand the cards to one person and ask them for a number, I point to another person and have them name a card. BAM! It looks just like that! (But you wouldn’t believe the back-end!) My ideal would be to lay a single card on the table top and ask a random stranger to name it. I’ve found that, sort of, and it’s absolutely astonishing to the specs. I’m still looking for something “better”. It’s what we do!
...what if I could read your mind?

It's more of a behind the curtain competition than it is a show piece. There are several ACAANs that will fool the audience but not many that will satisfy a performer.
ACAAN is one, in my opinion, of the weakest effects you can do but still one of the funniest to compete with when it comes to chatting with other performers. Effect: The mentalist memorize any kind of information in less than a second. $5 |

I think the key if you are going to do an ACAAN is to invent your own and perform it. You are going to be more committed to it, and it is better jamming with your friends to say that this is something you came up with. I played with like 6-7 versions of it until I stumbled on my own. I then stopped looking.
Think of it like a Rite of Passage. Make your own. With that said, I couldn't have stumbled on what I think works very well had I not explored the others. My collection of ACAAN knowledge aided me greatly in finding my own. In expanding this outwards, I decided one day that I have been studying for nearly 20 years on this or that. I didn't have any excuse not to create my own stuff. I looked at my collection of PDF's, videos, and books the other day, and it reminded me that there is no way that I can perform it all. I just want to learn and use those things as a springboard for personalized ideas that fit me. I published my first card effect in Linking Ring like 13 years ago, and ever since I have gotten the bug. Magic/Mentalism is a whole lot more fun for me when I create my own stuff.
