"The Price is Right" model made a mistake. Drew Carey made an on-the-sport-decision and gave away a car.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOE1h-e3QOI What would you have done? Looking at the big picture, I assume 21 grand is probably not a huge expense for a show like this (it may even be donated by the manufacturer as advertisement, but I don't know how they work out their deals). I think Carey made a good choice: He brought positive attention to the show, he "humanized" the model and showed empathy toward her error (after all, who DOESN'T make a mistake at work?), and I think it makes people feel good to see someone own a mistake and give her the car. |

I doubt they will give the car away.
Most folks can't pay the huge tax on such wins.

But they can get the cash equivalent sans taxes, can't they?
And I think there IS a such thing as bad publicity. I am thinking about Anthony Weiner, Gary Hart, PeeWee Herman, Bill Cosby, Andrew "Dice" Clay, Paula Deen ... stop me, there's no end! |

Okay, but ... can't you get a $21,000 car, sell it, pay taxes from the cash sale and still come out ahead?

Kabbalah is right. I've also heard that if you win big at a casino, the tax people come breathing down your neck before you even collect the cash.

And, these winnings are taxed as income. The IRS wants their share NOW.
In addition, state and local income and sales taxes also apply.

Whatever. Carey did the right thing and made everyone feel good. He's a starr for that in my book.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

There is no betting tax in England and rightly so. You Americans, you are being conned and why you stand for such a blatant rip off is just amazing.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I am sure they can find someone to pay the taxes on a $21,000 car and still get give them a few thousand dollars. No one is going to leave without getting something f=after winning a car. No one. Worse case scenario is they call a bank get a car loan and having the bank finance the car and sell it. Do you think if people were not getting those prizes it would not make the news?

Only the state taxes are due when possession is taken. Federal taxes aren't due until April 15th of the following year. Also note that the winner of the car being discussed her ALSO WON another car and a motorcycle.
More than enough to come out way ahead. |

The announcer said that the model did not get into trouble for her mistake...
I'll bet she got a ROYAL chewing out from her boss(es) and a very strong warning.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

She may have got chewed out. However in the long run they got a lot of great publicity. That never hurts. The publicity was worth way more that the $21,000 and even so I am sure they do not pay that price for the car. Win win for everyone involved.
