Hi everyone,
I am fairly new to magic and was wondering if anyone had suggestions for the next effects or books I should look at. At the moment I have an Invisible Deck and Double Back by John Allen. I know a few impromptu tricks with a deck of cards along with The Crazy Man's Handcuffs. My sleight of hand is average. Thanks. P.S. I hope this is the correct forum to post this in. |

I can recommend C@rd College, and the Roy@l Road, those are musts for card magic.
Also you can't be off with anything from Mr. Lorayne. When a magician lets you notice something on your own, his lie becomes impenetrable. Teller |

Do you want to specialize in card magic? Learn the double lift, this is a good place to start. You can find tutorials on Youtube. There are many, many seeming impossible tricks you can do with the double lift.
Eric Jones sells a rising card trick which is really neat. You can use the deck as a regular deck, yet make a selected card rise in the spectators hand! And it's fairly cheap Jim |

If you are seriously interested in MAGIC (not just one area, such as card tricks or coin tricks or rope tricks, etc.) I hope that you will consider investing in the TARBELL COURSE IN MAGIC. (I say INVEST, because, Tarbell will give you a broad picture of our craft. The original course was written in 1928, AND, IT'S STILL IN PRINT!!! There are seven volumes in the current edition ($20. per volume) and, you wont read it overnight! I believe that there is a FREE pdf of the original edition. Doc Tarbell covers every area of magic, and you will learn PRINCIPLES that you will use all of your life.
I'm retired with almost 70 years of performing. The first 20 were part time professional years, and the last 50 were full time professional. Much of the show that made me a good living came from Tarbell. The patter he suggests is now archaic!, Read it for the "flavor", You may possibly adapt some of it, but, mostly consider it "ancient history". The magic principles are priceless.

For a specific trick you can't go wrong with the Chicago surprise. This is my favorite trick to perform. I walk away at the end like I messed up and let them discover the final change.

Give Aldo Colombini's Magic a look. It packs a punch and doesn't require a lot of difficult sleight-of-hand.

"Those who think that magic consists of doing tricks, are strangers to magic Tricks are only the crude residue from which the lifeblood of magic has been drained." --S. H. Sharpe
Never mind "specific tricks"! Learn MAGIC. Instead of paying $50. for ONE prop (you cannot BUY a trick! A trick only exists while it is being performed. INVEST $20 in your first volume of Tarbell. For the money, books are absolutely your best investment! I should have mentioned Harry Lorayne's book in my first post, also. Posted: Apr 11, 2015 10:24 pm Refer to your first post. "...suggestions for the next effects..." You need to learn to use the "right" terms! An EFFECT is what the spectator SEES, or THINKS HE SEES. Effects are subjective. You cannot BUY an EFFECT, either! Posted: Apr 11, 2015 10:32 pm You will learn MORE TRICKS in Tarbell, than you will ever be able to do in your lifetime. You will also learn principles. The performer and his presentation, is much more important than the prop! The performance of a trick, involves "5% sleight of hand skill, 5% sensory illusion, 5% esoteric principles of science, PLUS EIGHTY FIVE PERCENT P S Y C H O L O G Y. Oh! Add 95% S H O W M A N S H I P to THAT! Dick Oslund Sneaky, underhanded, devious, and surreptitious itinerant mountebank
