Outstanding mentalism lecture. Between Looch's Penguin lecture # 2, and Jermay's Mind, this has been a wonderful week of learning from two masters for me. Haven't seen Looch perform before, and am now a fan. Everything taught on this lecture is solid, practical mentalism for the working pro. Really good value for the money.

There is a great variant of Nod to pocketwatch / Pocketwatch Premonition in Switchcraft called "A perfect prediction". It uses only three billets and a paperclip and is my preferred handling of this effect so far.
But I'm also looking forward to the lecture and to new thoughts on this masterpiece. |

I liked Looch's bank nite/chair test combo, and I thought the pocket bit there was extremely clever - the way the flap hangs out is one of the subtle pieces of thinking that doesn't get over emphasized, but underlines the level of attention that goes into his effects.
It won't surprise anyone to know that I think it was an excellent lecture - but I'm sincere in that opinion. Best, Atlas |

I have only seen the first two pieces, and I am really loving this.

Just ordered this and am sitting down to watch it. I like everything I have seen from Looch so far, so I'm excited.

This was so, so excellent as expected. Can't wait for The Black Project!
For those who watched this, if you can get the "coin thing" down with a nicker or US dollar coin, the possibilities are unlimited. Imagine combining the heads/tails process with a piece of information *you* (presumably) don't know. For example, taking something as simple as a playing card that the subject has peeked... You say, okay, they'll now reveal the card through a very mysterious way... "I'll spin the coin... you smack your hand down on it! If your card is red, we should expect a heads. If it's black, we should expect tails... Heads! IS your card red? It is! Excellent... let's continue. Your card must be a heart or diamond... once more we'll spin and smack... How about heads means hearts and tails indicates diamonds? Ok, go!" (spin and smack...) And so on... I think this would be a very interesting application of the principle vs. a prediction. The subject is somehow revealing a thought through an apparently random procedure vs. you predicting the outcome of a series of "flips". |

Robb, why not get a coin that's red on one side and black on the other? You can even color the coin in with a marker.

I've been playing with the coin thing since the preview chapter of the black project. US quarters work pretty well for this.
Overall I enjoyed the lecture a lot. The bank night routine got me, I'll admit. I was so focused on one thing that I didn't even notice the other bits. This is something that will be finding it's way into my set. I also really liked the routine with the 3 people thinking of places, and glad to see how it looks when things get "painful". The opening effect was fantastic, albeit it uses cards so some people may flinch. I would have liked to hear his thoughts on the business side of things, but that's more of a reflection of where I am at than a critique of the lecture. It was money well spent I feel. |

Example: You force the three of hearts. You spin a red/black coin. Then you spin a low/high coin. Then you spin three coins (1/2, 3/4, 5/6). Boom. I accept donations through paypal. |

So we have discussions on whether cards can be used in mentalism then we suggest to use a coin colored two different colors? Seriously?

The beauty of using a coin to make a 50/50 is that its an everyday item you can borrow to help make the choice. We could be going back into the realism of mental magic if we start painting coins different colours etc. Theres nothing wrong in assigning meaning to the 2 different sides if the coin and I discuss this in The Black Project as part of a Coin in hand phase where choice has already become predictable and the coin is used to decide a hand.

I could just about see it if you borrowed coins and used a marker to write on them, but I don't really see what is wrong with 'remember, heads is red, tails is black' in a one on one.
That said, for a table of people who are maybe slightly drunk, if you did have a bunch of coins and you wrote the options on them, at the end you would have a visual reminder of the choices made, which could be quite nice and alleviate the requirement for memory etc. I don't see this as being criminally mental magic. The bit in The Black Project that Looch mentions is very smart (but you have to take my word for it for now), and Colin McLeod also has some nice work in Divine on imposing meaning on a 50/50 decision like this that covers similar ground. I did consider using a small selection of foreign coins for looch's routine, purely for two reasons:
you always end up with some coins left over when you return from a holiday you could add in the coin used to the finale/reveal too but then it ruins the purity of looch's seemingly off the cuff delivery...

I wrote my comment about painting/writing somewhat tongue and cheek. I was imagining a scenario in which someone wanted to actually predict a card. It would take forever to do so with coins one by one. I didn't think there was a real solution to this, so I just came up with that idea. |

For the final step of exact value, you would just say, "You have to admit, this is pretty strange! Three random spins of a coin and we know so much... But what I don't know is the exact value... Just look at me... 2,4,6,8,10,Q... 2,4,6,8,10,Q... Is it 8? The 8 of hearts? Yes! Excellent!" And in any case, I wouldn't necessarily use a card reveal for the idea I was trying to share. The point was, that ANY information you know that you should NOT know you could apparently arrive at using the coin spins, but you would have to think on your feet.... An object: Is it something living or something dead? Is it an everyday object or something a bit unusual? Could you hold the object in your hand OR is it too large for that? A person: Is the person male OR a female? Is the person fictional OR real? REAL: Is the person a friend OR a relative? FICTIONAL: Is the fictional person a hero or villian? The point is that through this "random" process characteristics of the thought of object/person will be come to be known. They will not understand how this is working. Properly presented this would be very strange. It should be random, but *somehow* it is not... someone their subconscious mind is directing the outcome of the spin. See? |
