I remember when I used to go to the computer store and get the latest chess software. They usually had a good selection. There was always Chessmaster, of course. I got another product once that looked really promising once, but it just wouldn't work, and newer versions weren't forthcoming (can't remember the name). Once I got one that had a bunch of small Garry Kasparov videos on it - when you made a good or bad move, a small black & white video of GK would appear, saying, "Just what I would have played!" or "Your Knight is in danger!". Pretty fun.
A few years ago the selection started dwindling, but on the other hand, I did see that some of the excellent Fritz 8 products that were out of date were repackaged and sold for a good discount - still use one today. Now, it seems that the stores sell little to no chess software anymore, and has been replaced by a very large number of apps for phone and tablet, and now with apps for your desktop or laptop. I've noticed that many of them to a much better job of realistically handicapping the computer's play than we used to get All the 'big' programs like Fritz, Hiarcs, Shredder, etc..., are available via post or online. Apple has versions of Shredder and Hiarcs that are very good. I found a website that has a bunch of old programs you can download (anyone remember "Rebel Decade"?), but they no longer run on newer computers. Used Fritz 5.32 for a good long while... I still have a copy of Chessmaster 3000 that I can't bring myself to throw away What do you use these days? Do you have any particularly fond/bad memories of older products? I remember during the days of Pocket PCs and Palm devices using Chess Genius. That one's actually still available.

I was a teenager back in the 90s, when a lot of these came out. I remember the Kasparov program. I think it's called Kasparov Teaches Chess or something along those lines. And naturally, I played A LOT of chess at that time.
There are still a few folks I see from those days from time to time. To this day, we recycle Kasparov quotes from that program: "Move your knight!" "That's exactly the move I would have played!" |

I bought TurboChess in the 80s. It was written in TurboPascal. I had the stupid idea that I'd have the leisure to figure out chess programming from studying the source code. Turns out I had better things to do with my time.

One of the reasons I never played chess (or golf) is that people who know how generally don't want to teach someone, I assume because it's no fun to play a beginner and both those games appear to take a long time to learn. The idea of computer learning is appealing; I always assumed those games were written for those that already knew how to play.

I had a chess program when I bought my first Mac Plus in the early 1980's. Unfortunately it turned me off chess, because I could never beat the machine!

Holy cow....Fritz 2, Chessmaster 2100, Sargon, Siberian Chess, (the old) Power Chess, Mephito, Battle Chess/Battle Chess 4000 and more.... What a walk down memory lane.
The one I remember best was Grandmaster Chess. When the screen appeared, I instantly recognized it! The screen picture is rather small, but certainly I can live with it. Still looking for a way to get "Power Chess" up and running.

Deep in one of my dresser drawers I still have a t-shirt with the Grandmaster 2100 (?) wizard picture.

BTW, these games I have mentioned are not games that I own CD copies of, they were readily available on chess websites, for free. Some of them are a bit difficult to navigate, and you have to figure out which keys to press for different functions, while others are easy to work with and using just a mouse. And most all of them will still play a strong game of chess!

For me the best use of computers is to play online against other real people.
Until recently I had an ICC membership where you can play rated tournaments, blitz etc. The dues are reasonable, $125 for 2 years and they have a free one month trial. If anyone is interested you can check it out here - http://www.chessclub.com/ Back in the day I ran out and bought one of the first console machines from Radio Shack, as well as the first version of ChessMaster. Now I just use a free app on my phone which, at the highest levels, plays a VERY strong game.

One thing is for sure and that is that Chess is alive and well.
Remember all the predictions that computers would kill the game?

Well, to a degree, he was right, but that still doesn't mean even memorization is a 'negative' aspect of the game. I can appreciate the random/shuffle chess concept. I know it is out there, but I really haven't a clue as to whether it is ever going to be (or, already is?) a significant player in the chess world. '

http://www.caissa.com/encyclopedia/chess960.php I don't think it will ever catch on since it probably would have already. Maybe far in the future,

I had a free CD-Rom called Hoyle Table Games. This is the version that's for sale, a few differences;
http://www.hoylegaming.com/p-50-hoyle-pu......012.aspx The idea was that you were either in a cabin in the woods OR on a space station playing characters from either scenario. They had a number of games I was pretty good at; "Yatzee" "Backgammon." They also had a chess program. At its lowest setting, it skunked me badly. I don't play chess very well.
