I mainly do magic at the local children's hospital. I have a "sort of" costume that I wear. Black "magician's" tux jacket, black scrub pants, red shirt and suspenders and a big silly hat. I "look" like a magician, but lately I've been thinking about upping my game and getting more colorful and ridiculous looking. I'm thinking of stuff like borderline clown/magician just to be more silly looking for the kids. Shorts with knee high striped socks, high top converse, colorful jacket, gloves. Maybe the growing glove gag just to make the kids laugh at my look more.
The magic is good, I realize my entertainment doesn't hinge upon my look, but I'm really thinking this could add some more for the children to enjoy about my visit. The kooky looking magician that came to their room. Any comments are welcome here. Do you costume out for your kids shows or what? Thanks! Theodore- |

I would have to see it to be sure... but the black scrub pants with red shirt sounds pretty good. Being in the hospital I just like the sound of the scrub panst. Maybe you could "clown up" the shoes, suspenders, shirt, or hat a bit? Hard to say, but the whole clown outfit has just never been my style. But it works for a lot of people.
I love Silly Billy's work - but I would not feel right in an outfit like his. It is not wrong for him... just wrong for me |

Thanks for the reply. I've decided to go with a lab coat thanks to a suggestion from Café member silvercup. I found a cool one online for cheap. I'll jazz it up some more with the striped socks, a bow tie. It'll be a "look." A little silly, a little quirky, but fun for the kids.

I did decide on black cargo shorts to go with my red and black striped socks. They have tons of pockets for props, balls, etc. And I can wear a belt that will allow me to use a little servers pouch I have that can hold other things.
So so far it's: Burgundy lab coat Black cargo shorts Red an black striped knee socks Red and black striped bow tie Red suspenders Choice of shirts: red, black, striped, etc. Large party top hat, red and black, with the 4 card suits on it And for now, black ankle height boots with some colorful, probably red, laces. I'd like to get some high top red converse. Silly and ridiculous! The kids should love it |

Theodore, Please don't be offended. Just a suggestion. The red stripes clash with the burgundy lab coat. I would suggest getting a plain white lab coat (embroidered with your name or character (i.e., Doctor of Laughs, Mystery, etc.). Instead of the comical top hat, a white scrub cap (with comical adornments, buttons, etc.). Or keep the burgundy coat and witch to a white and black striped shirt. I stethoscope with a toilet plunger end could be an additional comic prop. You could check their comic pulse to see whose is stronger/weaker. No matter what you do, thanks for bring smiles to all the sick children.

I like the costume. I think we need to clearly look like entertainers when working with kids. Adult audiences want a magician just to look sharp.
