Hey all,
I just found Jim Steinmeyer's book "Nothing but Mystery". I has a chair test and a handful of interesting looking routines. I really haven't heard anything about it does anyone have any info on this book? http://www.jimsteinmeyer.com/catalog/pro......9&page=2 |

Jim is so rarely thought of as a creator of mentalism, but he's published some devious mental effects. The man has a gift for simultaneously polishing things and making them practical. I haven't purchased Nothing But Mystery, but it's $28, right? Good material is hard to come by for such a low price. Go for it. Take a small risk. It's not like you're spending $200 for a limited edition release that could be full of untested material. You're spending $28 for the thoughts of a modern genius who's consulted for Disney, Doug Henning, Copperfield, etc.
The secret of deception is in making the truth seem ridiculous.

I have read a few Steinmeyer books and for the most part they have been great the only trick that I have been disappointed in was his Soft Shoe Monte. 28$ is super cheap for 11 effects though. I may just take a plunge and let you know how it goes. |

Hundreds of dollars would be a plunge. Twenty-eight bucks is more like dipping in your toe.

To my thinking if you can't get $30 of value from reading Steinmeyer you aren't really trying or you are looking for something that doesn't exist.

That's because there's no business like Crow business.

Bob - ouch. I'll be more careful next time. It was meant as a complement against some of the higher priced stuff.

Jim Steinmeyer is one of the all-time great practical magical thinkers. I love his mainstream books too! He holds my highest esteem. His "Conjuring Anthology" is a classic, among many others.

There is so much in Conjuring Anthology, I have taken 3 tricks (er...excuse me experiments) from that book to the stage.
3 tricks out of any one book is excellent for me. Most of my stuff is combinations of tricks and techniques that I feel suit my persona. But there is also so much in there, that I would feel reasonably confident of going from Mentalism to straight party Magic. I could almost read the script from the tricks in Stienmeyer's book and do a whole show. I wouldn't. I believe in personalizing your performance. But Stienmeyer is so accessible and thorough in this book, one could if one chose to. |

Steinmeyer's mentalism effects tend to be more on the mental magic side of things, but certainly mentalists who work more strongly can appreciate the methods. He also often includes complete presentations which can be useful.

I see this book (Nothing but Mystery) advertised in Genii every month but have yet to see any in-depth reviews, even after comments here a year ago. Has anyone actually bought and performed any of the effects in this publication?
Thanks....Scalito |

Jim Steinmeier is a fantastic mentalist. I have several of his books. Many of his mentalist feats can be accomplished over the phone. He's an inspiration for radio magic!!!!
