I made a post in another area of this site about “MISDIRECTION” and a lot of magicians directed me to a book called strong magic by this guy who supposedly knows a lot about magic, Sooooo my question is do any of you have this book? Is it good? And where on earth can I get it, no one seems to have it for sale…LOL. Heather |

Hello Heather,
"Strong Magic" by Darwin Ortiz is indeed an excellent book. Unfortunately it's currently out of print. The book is mainly a comprehensive analysis of various presentational techniques and strategies to make your magic stronger. If you're looking for more information about misdirection try to check out "Leading with your head" by Gary Kurtz (unfortunately also currently out of print), "Don't look Now!" by Al Leech and "Magic by Misdirection" by Dariel Fitzkee. Concerning the out of print books, check the appropriate sub-forum of the Magic Café, used book dealers or Ebay. Good Luck! |

Heather,
If that smile don't help you with your misdirection then no book will! hehe.. enough corniness! You will generally find that the more you practice the easier it becomes.. I used to get busted with palming because I spent too long thinking about it... now I can blatantly shove it in my pocket without anyone so much as blinking.. I even caught a spectator watching my hand go into the pocket and fumble with my card to wallet effect (it got stuck!!) and later he said he couldn't work it out...lol Misdirection appears hard at first but you will find 'pace' as you perform more often. Good luck and let us know how you get on! |

I would be impressed if you found a copy of it, and I don't think that it is worth the asking price of some of the used copies of it. But there are many other good books on the topic. Gary Kurtz has one called "Leading with your Head" that is supposed to be very good and at a more reasonable price.
Good luck |

Greetings and Salutations Heather,
There are several places to begin your search. I generally begin at either H&R Magic Books, in Texas, or Bradbury Books & Beyond in Kansas City. Failing there, I go to Alibris.com, which specializes in all manner of used and out-of-print books, not just magic books, and bookfinder.com, which searches far and wide to come up with titles. I once found a book on this site and ended up sending a paypal payment to South Africa. It took about 10 days for the book to find its way to Kansas City. As for the usefulness of "Strong Magic," well, that all depends on your applying it. I think it's an excellent read with great ideas. Good luck in your search. Joe in KC Live a great adventure, have a magical life! |

Eugene Burger - Mastering The Art Of Magic
not out of print Why this book? Burger is well known for having exceptional presentational skills. His book is actually a collection of several smaller works he wrote many years ago that really made a name for him. In the book he reprints them, then discusses his current views about those things, all the things hes learned since then etc... MTAOM teaches the principles along with effects that he used in walk around situations (many of them anyway) there is even a shotglass production, unfortunately I doubt the specific setup would work for you, but you might think of a clever adaption. I could go on and on, but if I were to pick one thing that would really illustrate the value of this book, and pique your intrest I would say that this book contains a word, I wont tell you the word here, but this is a VERY practical POWERFUL and magical word to really grab the attention of your spectators when you need it. Even drunk ones cannot resist this word... Strong Magic has had mixed reviews... I don't think views are as mixed about Eugene Burger's Mastering The Art Of Magic... especially since it was reprinted by popular demand. Not saying better, just saying worth while and in print.

I read your question about Misdirection and it seems that you want to understand the patter a bit more to make the bar magic stronger for your existing effects, and maybe even find some new, strong effects to build out a short routine.
I think finding, paying for and reading Strong Magic to quickly improve close up bar magic is like trying to learn the history of the coffee trade just to make a good expresso. It's a bit overkill, especially when Strong Magic is out of print. The easiest way right now to strengthen your magic and to extend your effect lineup with more strong "tricks" is to get some DVDs or videos on bar and/or close-up magic from the BEST performers and learn from them. I think all non-expert magicians go through a mimicing phase and use the magic that they see, which I think is natural and the quickest way to learn. Then after some experience performing these new effects they will get an understanding of why some patter, misdirection techniques, and handlings work better and make their magic stronger. At this point, they (or you) will then tailor all of their routines to their own personal style with their own patter and maybe new handlings making sure that the learned elements of strong magic are included. If you're looking for close up magic that works in a bar atmosphere, then I HIGHLY recommend Bill Malone's On the Loose DVD series. He has lots of experience performing in the bar atmosphere and is one of the best presenters of magic as he gets people involved and his misdirection, patter, and presentation methods are very strong. The DVDs are filled with usable and proven effects. Go to penguinmagic.com, find the DVDs and check out his list of effects to see if they're appropriate for your situation. Maybe one of the above hounds will give them to you Do some searches here in the Café for bar magic and close up magic DVDs or videos. You're looking for the best performers who give the strongest magic. |

Strong Magic is a wonderful book, but it's a text book. One to be studied, marked-up, and returned to again as your own experience with magic grows.
If you're relatively new to magic, the videos that others have suggested will probably be of more immediate benefit. But get Strong Magic (if you can find it) so you can, at times, dig underneath your tricks understand why (not how) they work. |

Yes, I would also suggest the Burger book as it contains his previous work on close up performance which is very good.
Another place to possibly try for Strong Magic is Magic Books By Post in England. Salsa, re: "Haha I am off to change my picture to a beautiful women then ALL the secrets of magic are mine........" lol. Paul. |

Richard Kaufman has announced that STRONG MAGIC will be reprinted this year, so I expect it within a few years (eh, Richard's a busy man, right?).
