I've been thinking for a while about starting a Facebook page devoted to magic by manipulation. It would be a closed group that people would have to submit a request to join. I as the moderator would evaluate the applications and decide on approving or denying a request to join. Applicants would have to submit a description of their background in magic so that I would know they were serious about learning about the Art of Magic.
There was a Facebook page devoted to card manipulation called Card Manipulators + Flourishers but it hasn't been active since April 19, 2012--more than three years ago. I'd like to call such a page "Routined Manipulations" in honor of the books by Lewis Ganson. I don't think Lew would have minded. It would be a closed group that people would have to submit a request to join. Just as with the _Routined Manipulation_ books, it would be a place to discuss and submit ideas for routines--close-up and stage--that center on manipulation of all kinds. Ganson's series had both close-up and stand-up manipulation routines. To get the page rolling, I could publish on it some of the routines from my lecture notes. One advantage of such a Facebook group is that it would be relatively easy to share videos on a Facebook page. Videos posted here on The Magic Café are rather limited to very small file sizes. Would any Magic Café subscribers who follow the Finger/Stage Manipulation forum be interested in seeing and participating in such a Facebook page if it is created? I currently moderate the IBM Ring 103 Norfolk community Facebook page which is open to the public. But as I said, a page devoted to manipulation routines/acts/discussion would be a closed group, which was the case with the Card Manipulators + Flourishers group that I mentioned above. This suggestion is in the early planning stages and not totally coalesced in my mind--kind of a dream in progress. I welcome any comments or suggestions. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

Hi Sonny!
Would I have to give up my electric deck, and my Neil Foster coin bucket, and my P&L change bag for the 20th Century???

Dick,
I love the Electric Deck and the P&L Change Bag! I know some "purists" complain that the Change Bag is an obvious magician's prop. But then, so is a magic wand, right? And so is an athanor! (Look that up in your Funk 'n' Wagnalls!) In all honesty, I think there are way too many aspects of the Art of Magic that "purists" obsess about and which, if the lay audience could listen in on our debates about them, they would probably say "Huh???" Bottom line: If the audience is mystified and entertained, it doesn't matter whether you use pure sleight of hand or a prop. But I will say that there are always a few people in any audience who can sense and appreciate when the magic happens because of the skill and the personality of the performer. ----- Sonny

Well, the only electric deck that I own is handmade (by me) It took me about 30 minutes to make. I keep it in the case for a comedy bit, or for working "al fresco". (I can do all the standard flourished with a regular deck. --The one that I'm using, has been in use since 1951. (Only I (me) release the cards for the cascade shuffle with my FINGER TIPS! (HEE HEE)
I've never owned a Neil Foster pail. I did buy a gaff pail in an estate sale, but, sold it as soon as I could. I use a kitchen utility canister (eighty-nine cents in a thrift shop) I use no droppers, There is virtually no set up, and when I finish, I can reset in 5 seconds. The MD closes the show for families and for elementary schools. I can't follow it. I did have a change bag for a few years, as a teenager when I hadn't learned how to use my hands. I sold it. P.S. Did the Frischkorn cape get there??? --and, the 8x10 glossy with the stage full of plywood??? PPS...I aint got no Funk & Wagnall. Now, kin I join (beg, plead, whine)?

In general, anyone who posts in this Finger/Stage Manipulation forum who contacts me via the facebook Routined Manipulations page will be granted access. Being a member of The Magic Café is, as far as I'm concerned, proof that a person is serious about the Art of Magic.

Anatole ,
I appreciate you keeping the Facebook group a private , invitation-only group. I hope it stays that way. I see too many Facebook groups start off as "private" but then the admin changes or loses interest and before you know it there are people joining the group who were never meant to be there in the first place, then it becomes a big mess. -David |

Anyone can ask to join the "Routined Manipulations" facebook group. The request is sent to me as the administrator. I then check the personal facebook page of the person applying for membership in the group to see if the person is friends with other magicians or if they have photos/videos of them performing magic. In most cases if they do have friends who are magicians, I approve their request to join. If the personal facebook page does not show any indication of existing interest in magic, I will send them a private message asking them what their background in magic is. That helps me in deciding whether to add them to the group.
The reason for making the "Routined Manipulations" facebook page a closed group is that sometimes the discussions discuss techniques and secrets that we wouldn't want non-magicians to stumble upon. After all, we are all required to sign a pledge to honor the magicians' oath of secrecy when we become members of IBM, SAM, or any other magicians' society. I also have posted my lecture notes in the Files section of the "Routined Manipulations" page and those notes include explanations of my dancing cane routine, my interlocked billiard ball production, my "Third Millennium Silks" routine, and other tricks. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

Another resource I use to check a prospective member of the "Routined Manipulations" facebook page is the Finger/Stage Manipulation forum of The Magic Café. I figure if someone passed the requirements to join the Café, their credentials for participating in the "Routined Manipulations" page are equally valid.
----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez N.B. I am still having some memory/cognition problems that are complications of my heart bypass a few years ago. I'm not sure I remember how to "Invite" someone to join the group. So if you're interested in being a member of that fb group, send me a Private Message here on the Café. And if it seems like too much time goes by, try contacting me again. Sometimes I even forget my password for logging onto the Café. On facebook I am listed as Amado Narvaez and since there is more than one "Amado Narvaez" on facebook, you can go directly to my personal page by clicking to this link to a video of one of my manipulation acts that features my "Enchanted Walkingstick" (dancing cane routine) and "Third Millennium Silks" (a streamlined version of "20th Century Silks" that I also published in the August 1989 issue of GENII: https://www.facebook.com/amado.narvaez.1......&theater ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez
