What are some of the best things to do for a small panel in five minutes, with no ability to preshow beforehand?
Thanks Oli |

There are lots of things you can do...
But just give you a suggestion, you can do Syd Bergson's "El Numero" I just love that effect..

I should have been more clear.
I've been preparing a show for a while now, and now is the time to apply to put it on at the university amateur theatre. I have 5 minutes to pitch my idea to a small panel (they have never had a mentalism show at the university theatre before!) and would like to consider something very quick and powerful that I can perform for them in that time. I will look into El Numero. Other suggestions are still highly appreciated. Thank you all Oli |

You can find the effect in Richard Osterlind's easy to master mental miracles I think, as it is very very hard to find the original (as most of Bergson's work)
You can also find it in the Richard Osterlind Penguin lecture. And I've also heard (but I'm not certain) that Bob has a version of it. Anyway I hope this helps.

In this particular case, I have asked the assistant of some more-knowledgeable experts because I was only told about this pitch today, and it is tomorrow. The application was online and I didn't realise the pitch would be a) so soon or b) so short. I have been researching things to perform for the interviewers for a while but nothing with this short a time-frame. I also don't want any overlap with my show, which is why I have decided not to perform my opener. I have never performed in this situation before so I was asking for some advice from people who have. I was NOT asking for others to "do the work for me", simply to aid me in finding something suitable. Apologies if that came across wrong and offended. Oli |

Oli- So I'm assuming you have a full show that you know inside-out, yes? If so, I'm sure you don't need our help, a lot of routines can be shorted to fit your 5 minutes rule.
If not, Why did you take that application?

I have a full show, yes.
I was ideally hoping to find an act which was not in the show already. Shortening a current act may be workable. Thank you for the suggestions! |

And it's actually the best way to go, as you don't want to try something new tomorrow! vs something you already master.

You do your best and strongest five minute routine. It doesn't matter if it's already in your show, because if you don't get past the panel, there IS NO show.
Giving you a list of effects wouldn't be useful or helpful. Mentalism is primarily driven by the performer's persona, presence and premise. I could tell you the strongest thing I'd do in the situation, but it might not suit you at all. Nor is it likely that you'd have a few years to spare to learn it and hone the presentation. Do the routine you do best and feel comfortable with. An audition is no time to be experimenting. |

Just to confirm, you are supposed to perform during this pitch? If you are just pitching the idea of a me talism show then you may be better off just talking about how the show would be good for the theatre.

Why not just do the pitch and then give them a video of excerpts from your show as well as testimonials, media reviews, etc.? That's all I usually do.

That's the thing, Bob. This is my first one!
I've done little sketches before, around 15-20 minutes, but I don't have any testimonials or reviews because all of the performances have been amateur performances. My friends hire out a venue and have casual acts once every few weeks and so I try to perform there as much as possible. I've worked on this show for a long time with and so I think that I'm ready. Also I'm trying to get the slot now but the actual performance isn't for another 6 or so months, so I still have plenty of time to iron out any faults. I'm hoping that this show will be the start of something good, and I can use the videos and reviews from this show (like you suggested) to get more in future. For now, this is my first big step and I am extremely excited about it. |

Then just follow my earlier advice. Do the most powerful short routine that you are experienced and confident with. And if you get the show, make video of it.
In fact, start making videos whenever possible. What you can't edit into promo will still be invaluable as a way to review and analyze your performances. |

On May 8, 2015, mastermindreader wrote: As always, Bob is spot on (and doesn't need me to confirm this--I'm just agreeing here). Think about the ultimate goal and larger picture that you're trying to accomplish and take what you already know well and perform well and make it work for you, especially since it's short notice. I did a TV interview just this week with very short notice and the TV station asked that I perform a certain effect (a memorized magazine). Because of my crazy schedule I just didn't have time to sit down and memorize it comfortably, and found myself cramming late the night before. I stopped and told myself that I wasn't going to allow them to tell me what effects to do. I told them I had another effect that I could do (the morning before I headed out to the TV studio) and described it to them and they bought it and it went extremely well. Though I have performed the memorized magazine LIVE a lot before, I just wasn't comfortable cramming for it on such short notice (I have to memorize a CURRENT weekly issue of a magazine). I pulled out another effect and it worked marvelously and I could relax and focus on the interview and what I was trying to achieve. I accomplished my goal, which was to blow their minds quickly and easily and talk about my upcoming fundraising show. The effect didn't really matter as long as it was presented strong and fit into the short time frame that I had. If you care to take a look at the video of the interview, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xI2XGDOhsw I hope this helps somewhat. $.02

I ended up performing a Book Test from Corinda. It went over exceptionally well!
Now I just have to wait to see if they can fit me into next semester's schedule. I found out by 20th May. Thank you all for your help and advice. Oli |

UPDATE:
Unfortunately, I did not get a slot. The drama scene is very large at my university and I'm sure I must have been competing against many brilliant and creative people. All is not lost, I just have to have an even better effect for my next pitch! Thank you for all of your support Oli |
