Seeking a resource book about magical effects/topics, the sort of thing a smart Rookie Mage might pick up to further my studies. You know, some kind of book that lists most known magical effects and provides a description of some sort to go with them? It would also be cool if it was less than $100, capiche? Anyone? Buehler? :o)

You could then start buying digitized versions of DVDs and store them on your magic device for reference anywhere, at any time. Trust me, I wish I had an electronic version of all the books and videos I have purchased over the years. Life would be so much easier then. Currently I have an entire room dedicated to my magic library with over 600 books and videos but they aren't portable. Have you ever heard, "Go west young man, go west."? Today, the sage advise is, "Go digital young man, go digital."

I think I know something similar to what you may be looking for... And it's free! You may have even heard of it. Even if you have, I advise you reevaluate the site and try to use it's resources to it's fullest extent. It's great for research, especially on close-up card and coin work. As far as something more extensive on larger scale illusions and all types of magic, I'm unsure of one that exists... It's kinda hard to make something like that and keep it up to date because there's always new stuff to be mentioned and new material to be brought fourth.

Earlier, I suggested that RookieMage go digital with the books he is looking for. I commented that many were showing up in the public domain after their copyrights had expired but I got to wondering to what extent were magic books in the public domain. So I did a little research. I am pleased to report that I found and (legally) downloaded about 150 titles. Now most of them are really old but the principles are the same as those employed today. I found a wealth of information that I had never seen before and look forward to some late night reading. (I think that Harry Houndini's book, "The_Unmasking_of_Robert_Houndin" sounds interesting.)

Wow, thanks for all the helpful tips, the volume of free online resources was a pleasant surprise, cool stuff!
Just to clarify a bit, I was not looking so much for an instructional resource like the Tarbell course as I was looking for a reference book that covers as many effects as possible. Basically, a compilation that would list an effect, give a brief description of the effect and then name the inventor of the effect. So if I heard about some cool magical effect like The Amazing Zombie Ropes or some such, I could easily look up the inventor and description, to see if I needed to run out and begin to study zombies, ropes or both. A big thank you to Zephury and GS121002 for pointing me towards nice free online stuff, it looks like I may not need a hard copy book after all. Although I have found that some books are better in hard copy, often to make photos larger and more visible... |

All my books have been put into digital form by Conjuring Arts. I personally always prefer a regular book that I can hold in my hands, but - go to harryloraynemagic.com and click on "Magic E-Books" and you'll see a looooong list of what's available, and you can order right from there. Best - HL.
