Hi All,
I've begun compiling and writing up my notes for a second book. This will be a sequel to my first book, "Street Magic and the Art of War" contained within "The Secret Art of Magic" published in Dec. 2003. Over the years since its publication I've taken many notes detailing things I've learned about successfully performing a show anywhere in the world. At a later time, I'll detail some of the contents but for the time being I am wondering if anyone has any questions that I might answer within the pages of this new book. A little background might be in order: It wasn't but a few months after the publication of TSAOM that I began to think of things that I hadn't included in its pages. I don't want that to happen again! I would really like this to be my final word on the subject so I'm soliciting your input as to content. Please keep in mind, this is an advanced book on Street Performing. It won't necessarily address rudimentary concerns such as "How do I stop people?" I expect I may touch on some novice topics, but for the most part I want to move beyond that and address concepts most performers, advanced or not, usually don't think of, much less consciously act on, and yet make all the difference in the world when presenting a show in a professional, finished manner. My goal is to have this completed by the end of this year. This is your chance to shape the content to some extent. And have advanced questions addressed. So how about it? What say you? Best wishes, Eric |

I'm game, I'm performing on the streets and getting my own look on things, can always use an experienced view.on things.
No questions that come to mind at the moment. |

Here is a few. How do you make the rest of life work as a busker. I get the performing part for the most part, buy what about relationships with people at home? I heard Chris Capeheart say if you aren't on your second or third wife, you aren't trying. That doesn't sound like a way that I am willing to go. How can you live cheaply but well on the road? How do you stay motivated to go to work each day when no one is saying you have to go and conditions are tough outside? How do you size up a new town?

Eric, I am excited. I hope I will see you again soon and maybe I can offer some questions and you will autograph your first book for me.

Thanks Tommee, I look forward to being back in New Orleans in the Fall. I'll see you then at the Knights of Sleight if nothing else.
D. Yoder, excellent questions. I can tell you how to live modestly, keeping ones expenses to a minimum in Europe especially. Motivations? You either have a drive within, or you're in the wrong line of work. I look on it much like a preacher must look upon proselytizing, I'm on "a Mission" and nothing can stop me. Much as the Blues Brothers felt. As far as relationships are concerned, I've been married twice and my second marriage was for 26 years, wish it had been more. I'm not the one to hand out advice in that regard and won't address it in the book. Here I'll simply say what contributed to the longevity of my second marriage: make it clear from the outset who you are and what you do. Honesty is always the best policy. If they can hang with that, then you're good as gold. |

I love The Art Of... Such a wonderful read. Look forward to this one too. By the way, thanks for helping me to locate the book a few years ago, but all of those you put me in touch with only had their personal copies left. Lucky for me I ended up finding it in the magic clubs library! -Endless West!! |

No worries Endless, you're most welcome. Glad you got one finally.
D. Yoder, alas I was remiss in addressing one of your questions, that of sizing up a new town. Another fine question and an easy one given certain parameters: Do you mean an established pitch and new for you? Or, more importantly, a pitch where you've never been and don't know anything about? Both are simple and I touch on the former in TSAOM (Cellini had the answer there). As for the latter, another straightforward answer awaits. If you travel in Europe anyway, this little tidbit is essential. |

Eric ,
it's a pleasure to read you're writing again! I always enjoy your thoughts, ponders, 'formulations'. 'Copasetic' , for me(!), would be a book of YOUR 'questions' and 'wonders', after many years of working. "Why was that?" "How did that...?" "Who was that...?" ,..... and your thoughts on it all. We Magicians are always dealing, peddling, entertaining; with 'secrets'. ......next to a couple of threaded jokes(!). An experienced Performerer; writing, explaining about, 'turning' things.... No longer, "Look what I can do, that you can't." but,... "This is somehow something special(!),.. thanks for taking the time and sharing IT with me!" ,....i think such a book, might be 'the next step'... Something, only a guy who's survived the Streets would,..could know about. "Finding Peace, on the Streets." ,......now,. get back to your Tap Dancing class! smiles, and.. "Knees need not be broken, to take a break." gallagher p.s.: After drinking a coffee, and rereading 'this'... I think I'm asking for a book of Stories,.. Adventures, 'Ins, Outs, Ups, and Downs",.. with analysis(!) ,...sharing thoughts, making sence of the confusion(?). |

Thank you Mario, you're very kind. High praise indeed. Many thanks.
Gallagher, thanks to you as well. Your post was illuminative. I had planned on including some stories, parables of sorts, but as to the other stuff...I hadn't thought of touching on it directly. Maybe now I'll reconsider |

While I don't busk, I do work a number of situations where conditions can be similar (festivals, outdoor markets, etc.). I found the first book quite useful in regard to crowd management and the dynamics of an audience. Having not seen this discussed in other magic literature, I think it can be very useful to magicians of almost any performing style or venue. More thoughts on this would be quite welcome. I am looking forward to the second book.
Oh, and I'd like to see an entire section devoted to pi$$ing off a dead chicken's funeral director. Ha!

Are you sure you want to tip some of your life's work? there must be some things you are holding back. for that is the very reason why we are in this business, because we are allowed to hold back;)

Oh Michael, I'm glad to confirm the fact that there is an entire section devoted exclusively to "this is my pitch, and who is that Lady with the very loud voice?"
Nick, even if I could, remember Frank Garcia's words as told to Cellini: "If you want to hide a secret, put it in a book." (See "Open the City Gates"). Words don't mean much, until they are felt. Owned. I'm just throwing some street signs out there, some landmarks, to assure those that follow, it isn't virgin soil. |

I'll be looking forward to your latest effort Eric. Just the other day I was watching 'Four of a Kind' again. You're an inspiration.
If you're open to ideas, how about a discussion on keeping it fresh? Some days I have to work really hard to make it look like I'm not just going through the motions. For them, its their first show. For me, its about the 400th. |

Hi Pizpor,
Thanks! I'm not sure how inspiring my life has been but I know Cellini was a beacon. He inspired me and so many others to go as far as we could, and then try to go beyond that. I'm going to include quite a bit of information regarding travel. That is the key to keeping things fresh, for me anyway. There will be quite a few pages devoted to everything from the best clothes (colors, material), to my view of different countries and customs. Even if you want to just get away for a weekend, the info will be of some use. It will however be aimed towards the person who wants to take an extended trip where different languages will be used. As Buckingham would say, "It's easier than you think!" |

Highly anticipate this release I have been most impressed with your previous releases (DVD, Notes, Book) .....all must haves IMHO.
So many topics that could be covered....as for the traveling, perhaps your thoughts on different strategies for different pitches in dlfferent places. Great news on your latest endevour....I, for one, will be at the front of the line on it's release. Maxxx |
