I have a question, Eric:
You do a show, pass the hat, and after everybody drops someone comes up and says that they 'accidentally' dropped a $20 and would like it back. What do you do? |

Hi RiffRaff,
Something like that only happened to me one time as far as I can remember. Did this happen to you? If it did, what did you do? As far as my experience is concerned it happened perhaps 12 years ago, as I was performing at the Pecan Street Festival in Austin Texas. At the time it was one of my favorite gigs. Since then the management of the festival changed hands and they just about ruined it, so I haven't been back in many years. As I don't look in my hat as the money is dropped there, rather preferring to make eye contact with the people doing the dropping and scanning the rest of the crowd as I continue my banter, I almost never see who drops what. One year, after a show there, a lady approached me some ten minutes after I had completed one of ten shows I usually performed during the day. "I'm sorry to bother you" she said, "I had two bills in my hand, a five and a fifty and I accidentally put the fifty in your hat I think." A fifty had indeed been in my hat from that show, and she went on to make it clear that it was all the money she had. I gave it back to her whereupon she gave me the five she'd intended to give me. I was somewhat disappointed, but outwardly, cheerfully gave her fifty back to her. She was in turn pleased and went on her way thanking me for a good show. I've seen many performers watch the bills as they go into their hats, even calling out the denominations as they're dropped. This approach is decidedly different from the one I've chosen. I prefer to thank the people, and not watch the money. I may not make as much as them, I'm not sure, but I feel a lot better about my audiences than I think they feel about theirs. |

Hi Eric:
I look at their faces too, and would not be able to determine who had dropped a 20. What didn't make sense about their story is that they claimed to have dropped the 20 instead of TWO singles. Mistaking one bill for another can happen. Mistaking two bills for one of a different denomination adds a layer of unlikelihood. In any event, I did give them the 20... though I still wonder. |

I'd hope to be much further along by now, but due to upheaval in my personal life, I've had precious mental resources to devote to the books completion.
As a result, in the spirit of the political season, I've "suspended" work on it indefinitely. Thanks for everyone's interest and encouragement. When things change to a more favorable outlook, I'll let you know. |

That's sad to hear. Both that you have had the upheaval in your personal life and that you have stopped your book. I went great lengths to get a copy of your previous book. If the stars ever align and you begin work again I will be the first to put money down. I wish you the best of luck sir.

Eric, Has the idea crossed your mind to do the book using something like Go Fund Me?
If you decide to do that, I bet you will get all the money you need to produce it, plus some. AND...Most importantly, II hope things are getting better. |

I'd fund you sir for not only altruistic reasons such as the art but also selfish ones. I'm sure there are many more on here that would do the same for their own reasons.
