Thought I would post a review of this book, I had a search for it in the archives but found nothing so here goes:

This is a fairly basic book and contains chapters on Basic Card Handling, Magic for Kids, Business Magic amoung others but there is one effect in this book that is worth its weight in gold, and I haven't seen it anywhere else.

Its called Compulsion. The basic effect is that the spectator takes a pack of cards, shuffles them and starts dealing the them face down one at a time on the table. The magish goes on about compulsion and says "Just stop dealing when you feel compelled to", and amid much frolics such as " You want this card, not the one before it, or after it, you're sure..etc" the magish pulls out a sealed envelope with compulsion written accross it. He hands it to the specator and asks him to open it. Inside is a playing card, which just happens to match the card the spectator stopped at!

I love this, and its even better if you actually post the letter to whereever you are performing, it adds an element of the impossible, you knew weeks in advance what card would be dealt to. Crazy stuff.

Anyone have any comments on this effect or any questions?

laters all

This is not an original plot.
Although the prediction should be on the table at the start.
There are many ways to try and do this, some of them very clever.
I think Larry Jennings thought up the idea many years ago and called it open prediction.

Cheers for the thoughts eddie,

you can also have the envelope inside a suit pocket and bring it out that way.

I pulled out my old copy of Paul Daniel's book today, and then found this 13 year-old thread.

The book has quite a few gems. Compulsion, of course, stands out. I bought the book years ago just for that. Nick Einhorn does Compulsion in the Murphy's "At the Table" series.

Another gem from the book is that one can check if the deck has 52 cards is by spelling them out, "a-c-e, t-w-o,...,j-a-c-k, q-u-e-e-n, k-i-n-g" More remarkably, this count can be done in Swedish, Dutch, French and German.

Big Dan I also love compulsion.

A few years ago Dee Christopher opened up a company, the name was actually a year - 1984 or something like that. Anyways they gave away for free a trick and it was actually a re-make of conpulsion.

In the book there is also an interesting thing about playing cards, the thing with the K and 3.
Have a nice day

I've never seen this book, but Paul Daniels had a big influence on me when I was younger. I remember when I was a kid and I used to watch his show at home with my mom. Good days.

I am quietly awaiting the arrival of Paul's book, and have found many vids of his television show on the internet. I miss him.

I had the pleasure of being able to speak with him in 2015, and basically told him I wanted to thank him for all of the great entertainment he had given through the years. Always make it a point to let people know you appreciate them, even if you never meet them..it is too *** late after they leave us.
