Hey everyone,
One of the most valuable tools for cold reading is knowing the commonalities most everyone has but hasn't really considered. These are the places a cold reading is most effective because they sneak up on the sitter as incomprehesible data noone could know, and they hit more often as true. before I go on in this discussion, maybe the vets here could tell me if this sort of request goes into the "dont reveal the secret" arena, or perhaps maybe a "dont ask someone else how they do something specifically" taboo amongst practitioners. I dont want to commit an ettiquette crime. I was considering trying to find census information and trying to find useful tidbits. I used to be a med major, so I was also going to compile a medical chart based on statistical probability of death, and then divide it into a flow chart, diverging at various places a reading could splice it, like regions of the body, higher lower than a certain point, etc. (much of this JE uses, but i doubt he wrote it down for anyone ) then, I'd compile possible questions to ask at each point to pull the information from the guest without tipping things off. It could turn out to be a valuable tool for CR's. Has anyone heard of this before? has it already been done in public? (err, concealed public) |

One of the more interesting resources for cold-readers has always been "The World Almanac."

Bill,
If you do that, that would be great. I tried looking up some information on the USA census bureau but I didn't have to much luck. On somewhat a similar note I posted a subject on this forum for "A Pool of Predictions for 2002/2003" Hopefully to get a source we could all go to for hurling the headline kind of thing, form ...David Hoey's (sp?) book. Great Idea Bill. I hope you do it. "Something along the chest and head area" is getting kind of redundant, I'm surprised JE still uses it...especialy when the show is watched by ...millions, thousands...a lot of people. E-LEoni. |

For a source, for frequency of health problems, mortality and the like I suggest actuarial tables used by insurance companies.
Though, personally I try to stay away from health issues from Ford Ford has a better dea |

Jack dean published a manuscript a number of years ago titled" SOOTHSAYER", if I recall correctly. This was a study of statistical probabilities that could be used for a "Hurling The Headlines" type of program piece.
It covered things like airplane crashes, railroad accidents, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc. Nothing for use in CR but for a platform program it was useful. Best thoughts, John Smetana |

Bill, Before he died, I spent several months studying under the late Bascom Jones. Bascom loved cold-reading and pushed me to practice it as often as possible. It has always been a great fall back or instant magic source for me. I would recommend "King of the Cold Readers" as a fantastic resource. There was more that I could tell but it would violate/expose several well kept secrets. Contact me privatly and perhaps I can help you.

All EXCELLENT resources!
Now for the more mundane... You said you were a Med Student? Beverly Jergans (spelling may be off) put out a series of Palm Reading books that are most excellent and inexpensive that take the medical-science pov into consideration. It is highly recommended as a primer source. Anything and everything on Human Body structure, Eye and Skin coloration (discoloration, reactions/muscle testing, etc.), and Asian Face Reading techniques are, in my book, A MUST! Get a copy of Louise L. Hay's "You Can Heal Your Life" and, if you're as aware as I think you may be, you'll see ways of reaching into people you do readings for that are devastating. Learn the common ailments associated with given Astrological signs as well as related Numerology based factors. When this is combined with the Hay perspective you can reveal some amazing things... granted, I'm not tipping the whole of how I use this, but it is outlined in some existing material I've released as well as the pending "Reader's Bible" tome... even Kenton Knepper has stood up and taken note on this little "advantage" fate seemed to place into my hands. Others that have used this data, consider it a complete Reading system in and of itself. Police/Law Enforcement profile research and related techniques are also priceless! One of the best Cold Readers I've ever witnessed was a Criminal Investigator student that knew little to nothing about the more traditional aspects of Magic based CR methods. Best of luck!

BTW... you might find the statistical data concerning people's AStrology and common ailments interesting... Same goes with Body Shape and a plethora of other odds & ends. Now, not to belittle you, but by your own admission your "new at this game" so I'd add at least a decade or two to that research before even beginning to think of compiling a comprehensive book... that's accurate! I've been a full-time pro Reader for over 25 years and have only been writing and teaching the "how to" side of things for the past four or five years. Another favor you can do for yourself... FORGET ALL THE MAGIC DRIBBLE you've read on Cold Readings and Profiling... learn at least one legit divination system from start to finish and use it for a year... repeat this process the next year with a different system... do not insert any of the cheats of psycho-babble you've learned from this industry... GO BY THE BOOK ASSOCIATED WITH EACH DIVINATION SYSTEM ONLY. Mark Strivings, Richard Webster and numerous others will all tell you how shocked they were as to their accuracy in doing straight Readings without any trickery or psycho babble... they simply "read" the cards or runes based on what they mean as well as how they related via position. Until you have allowed yuorself this level of honest experience, yuo'll be short changing yuor own potential... I know, Ian will probably shoot me in the butt for saying this but... well, that's his opinion. Best of luck!

let me clear up, i was a pre-med med student, but changed majors when i realized that med school didnt quite give me the rush that saving lives did. imagine my self disgust when i took chem, physiology, bio, and micro-bio, only to switch majors after a particularly boring day of trying to indentify tissue through a microscope.
as far as being new, im new here, new to this side of cold reading, but for 2 years at college all of what i did involved the properties of cold reading, persuasion, motivation, and rhetoric, and have persued research in it since then. ive been a member of the skeptic society for quite some time. (and yes, i know the faults of that society as well as its strengths, i agree too many of them are too zealous about proving people wrong for ego reasons). and about 3 years before that i had a girlfriend that read tarot, and always inquisitive, i learned the rider waite deck to see how it all works. many talks with psychics at the local "psychic eye" shop taught me alot. they like me because i ran the very popular "blair witch" site and actually posted corrections about witches and wicca, which they loved me for. so, im not entirely new. i have experienced a cult first hand too. (funny side story, we were there because my buddy wanted to hook up with a girl who's father ran it). anyways, i dont propose to write a huge book, im talking about a flow chart with info at each point. my professional strengths lie in computer design, UI, and site layout, which involves alot of flow chart structuring. i was considering applying that truly dry but useful angle to a cold reading chart. by adding in different types of questions, in theory, if someone memorized the chart, they could be statistically perfect in their delivery, using win-win (as ian coins it) backing out when problems arise. my idea of it is almost reminiscent of the advantage one would have counting cards... its mathmatical in its application. i dont think ian would entirely disagree with you on the value of learning a divining system. yes, he doesnt believe you really need to, in that just mentioning things like 'aquarius rising in the house of scorpio, with moons in full actuation' seem to work just fine. But, if the sitter knew a system, and you used it to whatever means you needed it to, it would be just that more convincing. most of the people i know dont know much more than the zodiac, so anything i add on top of that works just fine. i read a passage in a book (i cant recall which one) that spoke about how some people who use divination techniques and dont realize that they are using CR actually believe they have powers. It was a very enlightening expose that gave me tons of insight into some of the people i run into that are clearly using CR, but insisit they have some sort of powers. I can see how they are fooling themselves. unfortunately, they are the hardest to explain something too. i tried with a guy at the local magic shop who kept insisting that the bible code was real. ugh. i printed 12 pages of refutations for it for him to no avail. even the fact that the code predicts GBush senior's assasination, (that didnt happen) doesnt convince him. or the fact the bible code system works with moby dick too. ok, enough... ill stop before i have the length police make some comment. |

Well, the whole Bible Code premise works "backwards" e.g. after the fact... kindof like Nostradamus and other prophetic bits from antiquity.
You are correct, in that most "shut eye" types don't realize how they move into a Cold Reading situation... as I state in my lectures to the shut eye world "James Randi is right in his charges of such things..." I then explain to them why by revealing the meanings of the cards, position, etc. and thus, move into the "science" behind the craft. Wicca, btw is not a "cult" but a religious path... that is, it's not a "cult" by the more current pov on the term. IN truth, any embodiment is a cult, including this board... and please, don't ever confuse me with the Wicca... I'm far from it! More akin to a Gnostic or Druid than anything else... but a realist nonetheless. Your flow chart idea is very interesting... I like the theory adn would be interested in seeing more on it as the project unfolds.
