Check out the salaries here and the benefits. Check out the average salaries of Pa. teachers and those across the UI.S. Maybe that is why I feel as I do. Also lesson plans once made are used over and over again. Our school day starts at 8:30 and ends at 2:30 for 180 days. Not counting delays. Which in that case teaching hours are just lost but the teachers get paid in full they just work less hours. I could go on and on but I have been through this a multitude of times here and elsewhere here in the district. We are making some headway but it is a grind. At this point in time we have a very closely balanced board and things are not quite as easy for the teachers as they once were. However nepotism is still rampant. I believe Pa. has the second or third highest paid teachers in the U.S.

Wow Aces, I can see your frustration. Personally I would not blame all teachers for Nepotism in your district. I have experienced what you speak off myself, or rather I have watched it happen.
Our Principal is a very nice, and unbelievably ineffective leader. She has no experience at the "Principal level" and it was clear to all that she was given the job by cronyism. We teachers, who felt stung by the clear violation of protocol that got her in, rallied to her side, wanting nothing more than to keep a good school running well. She was not able to accept assistance, and luckily the teachers know their job well, even the couple who are not as experienced as the rest. We are keeping the ship on course. It is sad when those who are quilified are pushed aside for those who are connected. I am glad you are working on fixing the situation. It surprised me, what you said about teaching hours lost. I think you are talking about things like "Snow days." We had a couple of those when I was growing up in New York, but not many. In California we are obliged to make up the lost time (Earthquake damage days, power failure days, etc.)and we don't get paid extra. It is considered part of the hours of education for which may salary is paid. I do see the evil fingers of corruption sticking up in your situation. I wonder, have you taken the fight to the state level? Here in California we have the California code of education. If a school of a district is violating that set o rules, they will get taken over. Most of the teachers stay, buit the admin is usually gioven the boot. They get replaced by administrators willing to follow the rules. This did happen about 12 years ago in Compton Unified School District. They were taken over for consistantly poor perfromance and some budgetary issues.

Cliffg37,
Snow days have to be made up. I am talking about late starts and what we call delays. These are usually days of cold weather. These range to a low of less than a 4 hour day and is considered a full school day as to the 180 required days. None of this time is made up. Average loss in delays is over 35 hours a year. Again this is teaching time lost and teaching time paid for. Breakdown of teacher salaries $30,000-39,999 40 $40,000-49,999 40 $50,000-59,999 17 $60,000-69,999 19 $70,000-79,999 30 School Delay Schedule SECONDARY CENTER DELAY SCHEDULE One Hour Delay: Grades 7-12 - will report at 8:35 a.m. and will be dismissed at 2:29 p.m. Two Hour Delay: Grades 7-12 - will report at 9:35 a.m. and will be dismissed at 2:29 p.m. Three Hour Delay: Grades 7-12 - will report at 10:35 a.m. and will be dismissed at 2:29 p.m. LUNCHES WILL BE SERVED WHEN THERE IS A THREE (3) HOUR DELAY. THERE WILL BE NO BREAKFAST SERVED ON ANY OF THE ABOVE THREE DELAYS. Includes Lunch time. Yea the day ends as 2:29.

Back to the OP. Went out for dinner with my wife tonight and the discussion turned to school. At one point, without prompting, she went off on how bad kids are today compared to 20 years ago and how parents have changed in their attitudes, essentially mimicking the comic Lobo posted. She said how if a student is causing problems in school today, the parents will blame the teacher. She also complained about how it is nearly impossible to discipline students today, that many are rude, dis-respectful, they use their phones in class, they will take pictures of tests with their phones, they'll text other students for answers and that she knows of a teacher who took a students phone away and the parents will complain to the principle about it. She also related that she had read a recent article about a teacher in another state figured out how to block internet access within their classroom and was fired for it after parents complained.
(I'm just relating what she said, I haven't tried to verify that particular nugget myself.) (This is mostly from her observations of what goes on in class. She doesn't have too many problems like this herself because she is fortunate to be able to work with students one on one.) |

Your salary scale is comparable to mine where I teach. Mine does go higher, but only with over 16 years of service and a master's or doctorate. I think your late starts should be made up as the hours of education are a state dictation. But, that is just my opinion. I wonder who came up with the scheduling idea that allowed that to slip under the radar? I doubt it was a teacher's union, as they would risk action from the state board of ed.
I do recognize in extreme weather situations the need to keep the kids safe and warm, but not at the cost of their education.

Times have changed but the same problems have always been around, just in different guises and contexts. I remember the same complaints back in the days of "The Blackboard Jungle." It was all about "how bad kids are today." ("Today," of course, meaning the 1950's)
I myself went to a pretty tough school. People wearing studded black leather, DA haircuts, and carrying switch blades. And those were the teachers. |

But the point is he committed a federal crime by using an illegal jammer. "Blocking radio communications in public can carry fines of up to $112,000 and/or imprisonment of up to one year." He's lucky that he was only suspended, not fired, and not imprisoned. At least so far. http://www.cnet.com/news/science-teacher......-phones/

Yes, total fallacy. That's why income tax revenues declined from $350 billion in 1981 to $495 billion in 1988 following the Reagan tax cuts. Oops, that's a bad example.

Total revenue from personal income tax, nothing else? Do you have a source? Too many partisan sites with official-looking urls are getting in the way.

Quick calculation. If Lobo's numbers are correct, revenue increased by 41% from 1981 to 1988. At the same time, inflation increased by 44% according to this site. (Beginning of 1981 to end of 1988.)
Which is to say, if nothing else changed (but I think the US population increased by ~6% in this time frame), then the income tax brought in fewer inflation-adjusted dollars. But I know nothing of economics, so maybe I'm looking at this all wrong.

I was discussing this cartoon elsewhere, and I used the numbers $600 billion and $900 billion, based on this site: http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/taxfacts/......ocid=200 I was corrected by a source I consider reliable that those numbers were inaccurate, because they included excise taxes and Medicare and social security taxes, which went up under Reagan, and that the appropriate numbers are those incited here. I'm willing to accept his numbers, by which the increase is only 43%, not 50% as I'd originally thought.
The conscientious and I tellectually honest fact-checker will of course note that Trudeau is blatantly and disingenuously misrepresenting the argument, which is not that "less revenue will turn into more revenue," but rather that a smaller PERCENTAGE of revenue may result in a greater AMOUNT of revenue.
