Hi everyone! I love 3 Fly routines and perform many of them. I was thinking of eventually getting Bob Kohler's "Ultimate Three Fly " someday. The thing is, I don't want to get it if I already own the gimmicks. Is it a unique gimmick? I own several gafedf coins from Lassen. I'm not asking for the secret or anything, I just want to know if it's unique to that routine.

The gimmick is a variation of a little-known gimmick, but realize that when you buy U3F you're buying not only the gimmick and accompanying coins but the routine which is brilliant!

You also might want to try the search function. The U3F and its gimmick have been discussed on several threads over the past two years! In fact several different versions of Three-Fly both gimmicked and pure slight of hand have been discussed at length.
The U3F gimmick was originally put out in an English Penny for a Steve Dusheck trick. It was crafted/made by Presley Guitar (don’t you just love the name!). Todd Lassen did a bit of R&D and devised a “locking” feature to the gimmick that allowed it to be handled more freely than the original Guitar version. Todd manufactured the gimmick by hand for Kohler until recently. He presently no longer makes the gimmick. Someone else using a computer driven lathe now makes it. You would think that the price would fall given the mass production of the gimmick, but it hasn’t. Bob Kohler’s routine is arguably one of the cleanest gimmicked versions. There are a multitude of routines of this ilk. If it’s a clean gimmicked version you want Kohler ranks near the top. Also near the top is Troy Hoosier’s work. He uses a different gimmick (one you probably already have) and merits looking into before you invest big bucks.

Glad you like the idea of my coins across. There is nothing wrong with using gimmicks when you are focused on entertaining.
Unless you go directly to someone and specifically ask for an Ultimate Three Fly gimmick, the odds of you having the exact gaff are slim. The odds of you having even the basic gaff are slim to none. Really. It was offered back in the 1970s in a different context and the two tricks it went with are virtually unknown today.

You can still get the gimmick and coins from Todd Lassen for $160 or $200 in "soft" coins, but to get the routine by Kohler you have to go through him and pay $315 for the gimmick, coins, instructions and video.

Hi Harry. You state that Todd Lassen is no longer making the gaff. Todd DOES still make the gaff, in fact he now offers alot of options with that gaff. He makes it in the original uncirculated 1921 Morgan version, or any other uncirculated silver dollar you choose. He makes a version with soft/worn silver dollars where all of the insert coins are remilled. And recently, due to popular demand he has made all the fixtures so he now produces this in any silver half dollar you choose.
I have seen the new computer generated versions now on the market and I can certainly attest that Todd's quality is by far better than these. However, if you want Bob's routine you will still need to buy from Bob.

Hey Mark, My bad! Since the thread was about Bob Kohler’s U3F specifically I was addressing the coins in the set that Bob Markets. I should have written that Todd no longer makes the gimmick for Bob Kohler.
You are absolutely correct that Todd Lassen does continue to make the gimmicks that are used in the U3F routine however, as you state, for the actual U3F routine you have to go to Bob Kohler. I was wrong in my understanding of the history of the gimmick (I was corrected via a PM) and it needs to be corrected. Todd Lassen did not improve or devise the “locking” feature. Bob Kohler, Robert Cabral and Mike Forbes working together invented that improvement or locking feature. Well before Todd Lassen had anything to do with the item. At one point and for a period of time Bob Kohler had the gimmicks manufactured by Todd. Jonathan, you sure invented a whole “school” of magic with your fingertip coins across. By the way, I have several of the Dusheck/Guitar English penny gimmicks and no they don’t work well for doing the U3F. They are primitive compared to the present model. Sort of like comparing an old Model T Ford to a modern Lexus! Finally, I was being a bit flippant about the manufacture of the gimmick. Handmade or CNC made price is all about man-machine hours (thanks Thomas!).

Funny thing about our buddy "Slippery Sam". That got me to invent the Edge Grip to Edge Grip Coin Exchange.
I wonder if Bob will add an attachment to his marketed holdout to permit a super clean vanish for the last coin in his Ultimate Three Fly. Kind of surprised Chris Kenner has not gotten that to happen yet.

They do. I saw Fitch use his coin device for a super clean 3 Fly end out in the halls at LVMI.

Bob did a great coin vanish of several coins from the BACK of his hand for me a long time ago. Wonder if he's gonna let that one out too?

I thought that the first locking slippery sam was mag. the shim in the gaff and a mag inside. So the idea, is not unique. Todd's U3F gaffs are defintely an improvement over Bob's orginal gaff.
In ease of use as well as appearence. Bob used the best craftman to made up this "Limited Edition" routine.

I had a "Slippery Sam" set and would have said something if there were an overlap in design, function and usage.

Hi Gang,
I thought Bob asked Todd To crimp the ends of the gaff. He did and Bob thought it looked too bad and said, "Can you fix this so it will work?" Then Todd put a lot of R&D into it and came up with the locking feature So it would both work and look good! Best David Neighbors The Coinjurer |
